Vintage French Christmas Holiday Tour!

“I’ve never been a big fan of red and green, and all the years I’ve been decorating my own home for the Yuletide season, I only used red once, and didn’t like it! I’ve never had a traditional tree by any means, and when I moved to a tiny cottage 5 years ago, I knew I had to carefully curate my collections.”

“My love of religious items, specifically the beautiful candelabras, statues, and gilded and rhinestone encrusted ex voto hearts became a central focus of my home décor. A neutral palette accented with little jewels of the unexpected here and there.”

“When it came time for my vintage French Christmas, I wanted to go as big as I could, considering I knew I’d have to settle for a tabletop tree. As I have high ceilings, I was able to get a 5’ tabletop that goes to the ceiling.”

“For the tree itself, I chose a matte champagne one and filled the space between branches with mercury glass orbs and finished it off with ex voto hearts and other religious symbols. This year the tree is in the corner of my dining area, next to the mantle. I balanced it with several smaller tinsel trees in champagne buckets and vintage French sapling pot.”

“The mantle itself was adorned with realistic faux greenery, a reproduction of a 16th Century Italian nativity set, and a pair of antique candelabras from a little chapel in France. Perfect for this vintage French Christmas theme!”

“Across the room on my altar turned console table (underneath is hollow, and is where I’m able to store the majority of my Christmas decorations), I layered natural elements, including a giant clamshell filled with ex voto hearts, antlers, and a birds nest.”

“I kept the shimmer of metallic going around the room by additional tinsel trees planted in beautiful vessels—well weathered cast iron urns this time.”

“On the largest of the tinsel trees, I strung vintage aqua mercury glass beads, and filled the urn with chandelier prisms around the base of the tree. Centered is a whitewashed nativity. Also featured in the vintage French Christmas is a glass cloche filled with santos crowns, reliquaries, and an antique French bronze Madonna. Next to that is a rather large antique English Sacred Heart of Jesus statue, covered in rosaries, and topped with another santos crown.”

“In the corner is a china cupboard filled with shells and coral. Then on top is a santos crown adorned bust. Also a vintage wooded star tangled in the original fabric cord, and more faux greenery.”

“I’ve hung a rather large wreath with angel on my normally doors wide open armoire that hides my TV.”

“Centered in the room is an antique English shipping crate. It doubles as storage and a coffee table! I’ve placed a large statue of infant Jesus complete with gilt metal halo in a wooden trough.”

“I also added mercury glass hearts piled in a perfectly tarnished silver bowl. Murano glass candies are overflowing in an antique French compote.”

“Sentimentally I included a glass donkey candy dish that my great grandmother had on her coffee table for over 50 years.”

“Upstairs is only my bedroom and a small bathroom. I added three small silver trees to the existing trophies and statues on top of my dresser.”
