Want to give your home that magical holiday feel but you’ve got curious little ones running around? Give these kid-friendly Christmas decor ideas a try!
Hey y’all! Kassandra here. Y’all know that I’m a mom of four little ones- So, trust me when I say I’ve had my decorating adventures around Christmas time. After much trial and error, I’ve learned (sometimes the hard way!) how to create magical Christmas interiors that are both beautiful and child-friendly.
And today, I’m sharing my tried-and-true tips for holiday decorating with kids in mind. Let’s make this Christmas both super fun for the little ones and stress-free!
Amongst all the pretty decor, the Christmas spirit all around us, and the fun gatherings, holidays with kids can get straight-up chaotic. One minute your cherished glass ornament is sparkling on the tree, and the next? Well, let’s just say my toddler thought it’d make a great ball.
That’s exactly why I’ve spent the last couple of holiday seasons completely rethinking how we deck our halls.
Don’t get me wrong, I absolutely adore traditional decor, as you’ve probably picked up by now. But, when kids are going through their explorer years, the decor is not a top priority, their safety, and enjoyment are!
Watching my kids actually enjoy our Christmas decor and be part of the process is much more rewarding and fun than having to constantly say “Don’t touch that!”.
Kid-Friendly Christmas Decor Ideas to Spark Holiday Cheer
The secret here isn’t giving up on gorgeous holiday decor – it’s working with your little ones’ natural curiosity. In our house, those delicate mercury glass ornaments now live on the top third of the tree, while the bottom is decked out with the most beautiful wooden and fabric ornaments you’ve ever seen. And you know what? The tree looks amazing!
So, in today’s post, I’m sharing kid-friendly Christmas decor ideas that’ll help build those lasting memories while keeping your sanity intact.

| Santa Advent Calendar | Christmas Stockings | Merry Christmas Garland
First up on the kid-friendly list? Touch-friendly zones!
Yes, create decor zones throughout your space where little ones can touch and interact with the festive elements. This will obviously vary depending on their ages, but overall think soft fabric garlands at kid height, oversized wooden ornaments they can rearrange, maybe a pom pom tree, and holiday pillows they can actually snuggle with.
My little ones now have their own collection of special ornaments they can handle and arrange however they want in their special Christmas spot.
Involving your kids in the decorating process not only does this keep them from eyeing the fragile stuff, but it’s something they’ll remember forever.
And here’s what no one tells you – this approach actually elevates your holiday decor. Those handmade salt dough ornaments and paper chains? They add character and warmth that no store-bought decoration ever could. Plus, watching your kids beam with pride at their contributions? That’s what holiday magic is really about.
Now, let’s get into more details about setting up an ornament strategy Yes, it might sound a bit too over the top but what and where you place your ornaments is essential when it comes to kid-friendly Christmas decor ideas. My biggest advice? Turn the bottom third of your tree into what I like to call the “jingle zone.” Hand all your bell ornaments there, so when little hands inevitably reach for the tree, I hear it right away.
For the rest of the bottom section, it’s all about unbreakable ornaments. Think wooden snowflakes, soft fabric stars, ribbons, and those gorgeous plastic baubles. The key is mixing textures and sizes while keeping everything child-safe.

My current favorites? Those Scandinavian-style wooden ornaments! They look expensive but they’re easy to recreate with some crafty savviness or you can also buy stunning ones at affordable prices (I’m linking some of my favorites below, by the way so don’t forget to click on the links if you’re interested!)
Now, about lighting – because nothing says “Christmas” quite like a warm, magical glow. But those traditional light strands and dangling cords? Not exactly kid-friendly. Here’s what’s working in our home:
Battery-operated LED fairy lights are an absolute must in any home with little ones. You can weave them through garlands, pop them in glass hurricanes, and even create light-up wall art – no cords to pull or trip over! Most come with timers, so you don’t have to remember to turn them off.
As for window decorating, try to switch your regular lights to those genius cordless LED candles with built-in dusk sensors. They look incredibly realistic, and y’all never have to worry about cords hanging down where curious hands might grab them.
Here’s a pro tip for any corded lights you do use: cord clips are your best friends! We run our light cords along the top of the baseboards and secure them with clear command hooks. Not the prettiest solution when you’re up close, but from normal viewing height? Completely invisible.

Advent Calendar | Felt Christmas Tree | Vintage Christmas Bells | Bell Ornaments | Pom Poms Star Lights | Fairy Lights | Star String Lights | Snowflake Paper Lanterns | Retro Holiday Lights Ornaments
The real magic happens when you layer these different lighting elements. Battery fairy lights nested in greenery, flameless candles in windows, and maybe one or two well-secured traditional light strands up high – and… tada! Y’all got an inviting and cozy space with that special holiday glow without any safety concerns.
Christmas Tree Safety: Fresh Ideas for Life with Little Ones
If you’re working with limited space or have a particularly curious crawler, consider getting a wall-mounted Christmas half-tree, seriously. These trees are trending at the moment in young families and for homes with pets.

They create such a striking look, almost like they’re growing out of your walls but with the traditional flair of regular trees. The huge bonus? they’re completely out of reach from tiny hands and they take up zero floor space while still delivering all that Christmas magic.
The Elevated Christmas Corner
Now, if mounting a tree is a bit too outside your comfort zone, let’s talk about my favorite trick: the elevated Christmas corner.
Remember that gorgeous traditional tree that kept getting knocked over? Here’s your solution: place a smaller tree on a sturdy side table, and suddenly you’ve got all the charm without the safety concerns.
As seen in this Christmas decor ideas example, the tree sits pretty in a woven basket on a white side table, decorated with colorful ornaments that catch the light just right. So pretty!
The Pom-Pom Tree That Dreams Are Made Of
Now, this is what I call thinking outside the box! This whimsical pom-pom tree is basically a giant craft project turned into the most spectacular holiday decor.
Made entirely of soft, colorful pom-poms in festive shades of pink, green, and red, it’s completely kid-proof and absolutely stunning.
I just love this DIY project by Aww Sam. It’s perfect to get the kids involved in making it – just prep those pom-poms and let them help arrange the colors!

The Sweetest Felt Advent Calendar
Speaking of felt – this pastel stockings advent calendar is giving me all the candy-shop-meets-Christmas vibes!
Hung on a simple white shelf unit, these soft felt stockings in mint, pink, and lavender create the most adorable advent calendar display.
The Window-Side Wonder
Here’s a brilliant take on the kid-friendly tree: a small potted evergreen turned holiday masterpiece, positioned perfectly in a sunny window nook.
Decorated with soft ornaments and candy canes, it’s the perfect height for little ones to admire (and touch!) safely. That vintage box filled with holiday treasures underneath? Smart storage that doubles as decor and can also work to hide away some secret Christmas candy!
The Snowflake Ceiling
Talk about bringing the magic! These paper snowflakes suspended from the ceiling create the most enchanting winter wonderland effect.
It’s completely safe for curious kids, and imagine their delight looking up to see “snow” inside! Plus, this is a perfect holiday craft project to do together – each snowflake can be as unique as your little one’s personality. Here’s the super-easy DIY tutorial!
Starlight, Star Bright
Here’s a show-stopping idea that’s totally kid-safe: framing your doorway with paper stars. These golden beauties create such an ethereal glow without any breakable parts.
The best part? If one falls down (or gets tugged on), zero clean-up is needed. This modern take on holiday decor works especially well in minimal spaces and creates the most magical entrance to any room.
Bloomin’ Beautiful
Now this is what I call thinking outside the box! Swapping traditional ornaments for paper flowers gives your tree such a unique, sophisticated look. Are those blush pink and navy blooms mixed with traditional greenery? Absolutely stunning.
It’s perfect for homes with tiny tots since there’s nothing that can shatter, and you can even turn to make these into a family craft project. Trust me, your kids will love telling everyone they helped decorate the tree!
Pastel Paradise
Speaking of kid-friendly – this mantel display is pure magic! The soft pastels and whimsical elements create such a sweet holiday vignette that appeals to both kids and adults.
Those little houses and stars are perfect for curious hands to explore, while the pom-pom garland adds texture without any breakable elements. Notice how everything is secured well to the mantel? That’s key when decorating with little ones around.
Floating Fantasy
Last but definitely not least, check out this elevated paper star and candle display! It’s such a clever way to create a show-stopping piece that’s completely out of reach. Just remember to switch up those candles for flameless ones!
The mix of kraft paper stars, greenery, and those sweet little bells creates depth and interest without using any breakable ornaments. Plus, it draws the eye up, making your space feel taller and more dramatic.
Window Wonderland
Take a look at this gorgeous ornament display above a bay window – isn’t it dreamy? By hanging those beautiful vintage-style ornaments, bells, and berries high above reach, you get to enjoy your most precious decorations while keeping them safe from little hands.
The mix of pink, red, and metallic ornaments creates such a lovely focal point, and the added greenery brings in that classic Christmas touch.
Pro tip: Use clear fishing line for an almost invisible hanging solution.
The Festive Felt Swap
Feeling crafty and want something totally different? Skip the traditional tree altogether!
You can go the creative route and create a felt tree that fits your decor aesthetic while also doubling as the perfect kid-friendly Christmas tree idea.
The Holiday Play Zone
Another simple but incredibly useful Christmas decor ideas option is having a dedicated area where kids can actually interact with holiday decor. It can be their rooms, a hallway, a playroom, or, if you’re very short on space, your kitchen!
You can go all out and set up a cozy holiday corner with a soft fabric advent calendar, festive throw pillows, and a basket of holiday books. The kids can rearrange everything to their heart’s content, and nothing can break. Win-win!
Y’all, our home has never felt more festive since making the switch to kid-friendly holiday decor. Instead of stressing about broken ornaments, we’re making memories with decorations everyone can enjoy.
