Modern Coastal Style Home Tour

Modern coastal style home tour and today I’m featuring my own space at the beach. Primarily I design and decorate with what I love, ignoring trends. Let’s take a “dive in” to our beach home and see how it’s looking today.

Modern Coastal Style Home Tour – At The Beach

Let me preface by saying that I don’t adhere to trends. As a decades long decorator have learned all the hard lessons! I design for myself and my family and how we like to live. At our beach home it’s all about casual and clean living. When you have a view that can speak for itself! So not a lot of stuff and colors inspired by the beach outside are what I go for.

The Dining Room

By keeping the decor sparse, I can enjoy creating new scenes with table settings. This room hasn’t changed much since we purchased our beach home about 18 years ago. I was inspired by the chandelier and the flamingo painting. Both were found at yard sales! Most of what we have here is part of a collected look, curated over time. We work with a budget and designed and made this table ourselves, which you can see HERE.

Unquestionably, the key to decorating is to stick with what you love! Styles come and go and if you love a new trend, then add small investments in the way of pillows and accessories. New artwork can be a game changer and is found inexpensively at most home stores. Without a doubt, my artwork is here to stay for this unique look that I love!

In one corner of the dining room is this console table and artwork reflected in the mirror. In addition to providing a place for decorative objects, it provides ambiance and balances out the room on one side. We made the corbels out of wood and they’ve been wrapped in old chippy ceiling tin. Then we drew a template and had the glass top made specifically for this area. Not only is it unique, but timeless and can be made “trendy” depending on the decorative objects put in place. Here I chose some simple wicker and glass hurricanes and found oyster shells.

Modern Coastal Style Home Tour – Living Room

We love the look of a clean and somewhat sparse living room. Since this is our vacation home and we aren’t there as often, I want a place to just relax. In addition to the relaxing feel there is less to clean and dust.

I invested in the sofa and loveseat that are from Pottery Barn. Not only are they great for a modern style, but are easy to clean and very comfortable. See my review of the Pottery Barn slipcovered sofas.

Opposite the sofa area we added a console table with some beach inspired decor. There is absolutely NO tv allowed in our main living space here! The only tv has been relegated to my husband’s den. In addition to the beach view, we have several pieces of serene modern abstract artwork.

Modern Coastal Style Home Kitchen

In the first image in the post, you have a view looking out of the kitchen area across the breakfast bar. We did invest in a kitchen remodel a few years ago and I couldn’t be happier! We kept most of the cabinets and did much of the work ourselves to save money. I have a post covering some of that here and it talks about our countertops and more!

To keep the look clean we have incorporated a lot of storage. This old step back cabinet holds extra dishes, along with the pantry.

In addition to the dining area and breakfast bar, we have a nice sized breakfast nook. My husband and I usually grab our morning coffee and sit here while the sun rises over the ocean. I juxtaposed the older French chairs against the modern silhouette of the table.

The Entry Foyer

I don’t believe that I’ve ever shared the entry here before!! We just made some changes and I’m still working on editing the area. It’s nothing fancy, but a spacious and oddly shaped foyer. In our future plans are replacing all of the flooring with luxury vinyl plank. That will be a costly project, so for now it’s on the back burner while we live with the builder grade tile.

I added this blue raffia covered small console table in place of the wall console that we had before. I don’t have images of that one, but this fits far better for the modern coastal style home look that I’m going for. The covered basket holds the dog leashes, keeping them out of sight.

As you come in, one side has two bedrooms and the laundry room. In addition to those two bedrooms (and the master) there is a den on the other side. That’s my husband’s domain with a pair of comfy chairs and the tv. I plan on making a few changes in there, but it’s far down the list.

It’s behind a set of French doors, so can be closed off for privacy and sound issues. I love that, but don’t love how “his room” looks as you come in. Everything in here was either a DIY project or hand me down and I have a vision of how it will look going forward.

Guest Room One

This bedroom is where guests actually do stay when visiting, while the second guest room is more of a spare space.

Guest Room Two

Will be updated, but I do plan on incorporating those old stained glass windows.

The dresser was found curbside, just as you see it! This bedroom will likely become a home office/workout room with it’s own modern coastal style!

Guest Bathroom

There is one guest bathroom for the two guest rooms to share. We just recently remodeled this room and you can see more in THIS POST!

Taking out the tub in favor of a shower was a great decision here! I can’t recall if a guest ever took a bath in this room.

Master Bedroom

The master bedroom as you see it now and I’m not sure what changes will be made. As you can see, it’s all about the view!

Modern Coastal Style Home Master Bathroom

All of the bathrooms were remodeled at one time. It was less expensive for us to do it this way and less of a mess! HUGE change…and we love this update.

The entire process, sources and before images are in THIS POST!

Powder Room

Another dramatic change with more in THIS POST. You HAVE to see this room and the before, so click on over for that!

The Laundry Room

While this room hasn’t made her full reveal yet, it’s had some changes to share! I’ll take you there, once we’ve hung the wallpaper and added a few more touches soon!

This is a peek at the wallpaper and we plan on doing something creative with it! I’ll have lots to share about this room soon!

I hope that you enjoyed this tour and in closing I have one more piece of advice to share. When decorating a home, take your time and live with it. Even if you’re lucky enough to have a new build, you’ll find that going slowly is the best way to not have regrets!

  1. It’s absolutely beautiful Janet!!! You have brought the beauty of the outside in. Love every detail in the rooms. You must have many guests! Who wouldn’t love hanging out in your most beautiful beach house. Thanks for the tour!

  2. What a lovely and gracious weekend home you’re creating! So many thoughtful and intriguing details (that glass topped corbel console is a winner, for sure!) that scream ‘Janet!’ I’m crazy about that master bath tub … I would love to have a huge freestanding tub like that – though, I imagine I would still opt for a shower.
Thanks for the extensive tour – I enjoyed every pic and comment.

  3. I love this!!! A perfect place to enjoy the beach and relax!

  4. So beautiful & serene. Love the coastal colors!

  5. Oh Janet how beautiful and serene your beach home is. I just love that view out your bedroom. Love all the pretty and light elements you put into your spaces. Gorgeous girl!

  7. Miche Ortega says:

Simply beautiful, and tastefully done, Janet. I loved this home tour, and I truly LOVE the flamingo art. Yes, you do have to learn patience in decorating, or you can waste a whole of money. Thank you for sharing.

  8. Deborah Ann Bell says:

Aww Janet, thanks for the tour. The only thing is I would never want to leave. Blissfully peaceful and happy.

  9. Love the mix of turquoise and white. I would love to see this wallpaper when finished in the laundry room.

Thank you so much for sharing your ideas and time with us!

  10. Janet what a fabulous tour. I really love many things, but the flamingo art was wonderful. Sometimes I don’t think we pay enough attention to what goes on the walls. I can’t say enough about the view either. Love…

  11. You stated that you have had those flamingo pictures over a decade? Well, that’s a surprise because they look new and blends in with everything. Very relaxing! I love both beds. The tile floor to me looks great. My floors are similar to yours and are difficult to keep clean (grout lines). Wood would be nice but why spend$$. I love that chippy white dresser. I can’t wait to see the laundry room. That view reminds me of a Cancun resort.

  12. Ok I’m green with envy. You are on the water/shore/coast. Curious what state is the beach house located- like are you on the Pacific or the Atlantic?

  13. Donna Marie says:

You have a lovely beach home! You are right about living with your home before making any decisions about decorations or remodels.

  14. Leena Lanteigne says:

Absolutely stunning! From the gorgeous decor to the captivating view, it’s all fabulous and so inviting! Thank you for sharing!

    1. Hi Leena! Glad that you enjoyed this coastal tour!

  15. I love this house. Bright and cheery, with just enough shabby chic/cottage touches to keep things casual, comfortable and affordable without crossing over to old fashioned and silly looking. THANK YOU for not doing the open cabinet thing. It doesn’t work for me yet so many of the beach cottage interiors use it. This is going onto my Pinterest board for inspiration!

    1. Thank you Sandy! This is my beach home and it makes me happy whenever I am there ☺️
