A 1939 Cape Cod on a quarter-acre lot, four kids, and a wish list that included a mudroom, a real master bath, and a garage. That’s the brief Anchor Builders walked into — and the organic modern cottage they came back will steal your heart!
Welcome back to a new edition of Shabby’s home tour series, y’all! In this home tour, we’ll visit a sweet family home that’s equal parts charming as practical.
Nearly 1,500 square feet added across three levels, and somehow the home still feels inviting and cozy. Like it was always meant to be this way!
Dressed in warm creams, soft whites, rich wood floors, the color palette leans into neutrals almost entirely, with the occasional whisper of sage or blue-gray to keep things from feeling flat.
What creates the contrast here isn’t color, it’s finishes. Iron hardware, rustic wood, crossback chairs next to sleek white cabinetry. It’s a small detail that really adds to the home’s personality.
Nest in the Trees: An Organic Modern Cottage Home Tour
Let’s take a look around, shall we?
Organic Modern Cottage Home Tour: The Entryway
The first thing you notice walking in is the staircase. The mahogany banister it’s such a classic, but especially against the white painted balusters. It’s a timeless color duo that works beautifully in this room.
The rest of the space steps back with soft cream walls, hardwood floors and neutral decor.
There’s a small crystal chandelier overhead that I just love here. It adds a little sparkle while working within the neutral palette.
Notice how much of the character in this entryway comes from what isn’t there — no gallery wall, no console table stacked with decorative objects, no seasonal vignette. Just good bones, good light, and a lovely dog who clearly owns the place.
If your entry feels overwhelming, this is a good reminder: sometimes editing is the best design move.
From The Dining Room Into The Living Room
This view through the arched doorway might be my favorite moment in the whole home tour!
While it may seem like just a simple architectural feature, the arch itself does a lot for the space. It defines the dining space without closing it off, and it frames the living room beyond like a little painting.
What I keep coming back to though is the furniture pairing in the dining room: a warm wood pedestal table with metal industrial chairs pulled up around it.
On paper that sounds like it might clash. In practice it just works!
That’s the iron-meets-warmth tension that runs through this whole home, and the dining room is where you feel it most clearly. The rougher finishes don’t fight the softness around them, but complement it.
With a neutral sofa, a cream and blue patterned armchair and lots of natural light from that window wall, the living room beyond carries the same design approach.
It’s casual, stylish and elevated but practical.
And with four kids? That balance matters more than almost anything else!
Sleek Simplicity: The Kitchen
In the kitchen of this organic modern cottage we can see the neutral palette shining bright through again.
This is a daily space that reflects a very practical approach and that’s one of the many reasons I like it so much!
Yes, white kitchen, brass pendants, kitchen island… it doesn’t sound that special in theory but it’s the little design choices that make it special.
Like the wine fridge tucked into the base of the island, the wide open counters, or the warm walnut shade of the crossback barstools pull in the same rustic note we saw in the dining room.
This is such a smart layout for a family kitchen, especially for one this size.
Wide open counters, clear sightlines, nothing in the way. If you’re cooking dinner while keeping an eye on little ones, you’ll understand why this is such a great feature!
The Mudroom
Oh, this mudroom! I genuinely think a well-designed mudroom is one of the best spaces a family home can have. The downside? It either works for your family or it doesn’t, and there’s no in-between.
This one? With its soft blue-green cabinetry, built-in wood bench with drawers, open shelving, hooks and the necessary space for everyday mess, this mudroom is a total dream.
And that black penny tile floor. Such a cute touch!
If you’re planning to add one to your home, take this one from this organic modern cottage as inspiration!
It just shows how important it is to design the storage first and the aesthetics second. When the bones are right, everything else falls into place. As it clearly did here!
The Primary Bathroom
Y’all, a clawfoot tub in front of a window with a stunning view. I mean, what else could you ask for!
With spa-like flair, this bathroom is all about luxe serenity. Gray walls, marble tile floor, brass sconces flanking both mirrors — everything is pulling in the same quiet and warm direction
Instead of one long double vanity pushed against a wall, there are two separate ones on either side of the tub. It gives the tub room to exist on its own, and it makes the whole layout way more practical.
If you’re ever redesigning a primary bath and have the square footage, that split vanity approach is worth considering!
I just love that little globe pendant! We don’t often see those in bathrooms. It works really well against all the more traditional elements in the room, like the clawfoot and the sconces.
It’s a playful touch that goes to show to have a little fun with the finishing details. Not all fixtures have to match the same finish or even the same design era!
Cheery & Sweet: The Nursery
And we’re ending on a happy note, the nursery!
Instead of committing to a full color scheme or a themed nursery, they kept the walls white and let one piece carry the color.
The room feels playful without being overwhelming, and when the time comes to transition it into a big kid room, you’re really just swapping out that one piece.
The beaded chandelier is unexpected up there, nurseries usually get something more predictable, but it ties right back into the warmth you see in every other room of this house.
With a rocking chair tucked in the corner and a little stuffed lion keeping watch from the top of the storage unit, this nursery room truly is the sweetest!

I love how approachable this home tour renovation is!
This house started as a 1939 Cape Cod with two tiny dormers.
And now it has turned into an organic modern cottage with a stunning and practical mudroom, an elevated kitchen, a bathroom worth lingering in, and the sweetest nursery.
Built for right now, but flexible enough for whatever comes next!
