Simple Summer Table With A Seashell Candle DIY

Everything looks better by candlelight as it casts such a warm and inviting glow. I had some time to play before setting the table for a dinner party this weekend and knew that I wanted to use plenty of candles and give it a decidedly summer theme. With no market florals in the house and seashells sitting in a basket I had an idea pop into my head…so read on and there will be a tutorial for you.

With my garden clippers in hand I went out and cut some of our Pink Ginger flowers that grow on the side yard on the north end of our property. I pulled out my vintage fish poacher that I often use for low dining table centerpieces and you can see how I use that in THIS post and THIS one with a little DIY as well:~)

Some palm leaves and assorted greenery were used in the centerpiece, and I love how it all came together to inspire me in styling the rest of the table. I almost always start my tablescapes with flowers and go from there!

My next step was to add some aqua mercury glass votives with candles. I generally add some water to my votives and float tealight candles in each one. It’s a trick that I discovered when I had no larger votive candles and with the candles floating, they sparkle and give off some stunning moving light!

Instead of just sprinkling shells on the table I grabbed some shells from my beach hunting and decided to make some candles. It’s so simple and if you’ve never made candles before, a great way to start! Use a glue gun and affix your wick to the center of each shell…

Melt some wax in a double boiler and when melted simply pour into each shell. I use soy wax and added a fresh air candle scent to the wax to make the room smell yum. Try and find shells that have relatively flat bottoms…

Wait about 1/2 hr for the wax to set and trim your wicks…

A nice mix of candles adds interest to the table…

A crisp white linen tablecloth and monogrammed napkins, plain white everyday
dishes from Pottery Barn, vintage silverplate flatware and water in cut crystal wine glasses make this table summer special and oh so pretty!

  6. Oh my gosh, what a fabulous idea! I have a billion shells from Sanibel and Naples so I'm definitely going to try this!!! I didn't realize it was so easy:) I never knew about adding water to votive's either so thank you for that tip. Pinning this for future reference.

  7. This setting is divine. All the different textures, and clean lines of the votive's and crystal really make this sparkle. Not to mention the colors. I just love the aqua and peachy pinks. What a knock out summer table, Janet!!
