For some, it’s just a matter of throwing down any ol’ piece of fabric, but in my experience, there’s so much more to it than meets the eye!
Last year, after a lot of research, I opted to swap out the rug in our family room. Y’all, I couldn’t believe the difference it made!
That new, larger rug pulled our sitting area together beautifully. Suddenly, all our furniture and accent pieces just felt right. It was one of those changes that makes you wonder why you didn’t do it sooner!

Now, I’ve seen my fair share of rug dilemmas over the years. One of the biggest issues we may run into is picking a rug that’s just too small for our space. Another tricky spot is when the rug doesn’t quite mesh with the rest of the room’s decor. Both can really throw off the look of your living room, so it’s important to keep it in mind.
Understanding Sizes for Living Room Area Rugs
Alright, let’s go to the crucial part y’all: Sizing!
The right size rug can really pull your room together, while the wrong size can make everything feel off-kilter.
Standard Rug Sizes Explained
Here’s a quick rundown of the most common rug sizes you’ll come across:
- 5’ x 8’: Great for smaller living spaces or anchoring a coffee table area.
- 8’ x 10’: This size works well in most average-sized living rooms.
- 9’ x 12’: Perfect for larger living spaces with more furniture.
- 10’ x 14’: Ideal for spacious open-concept living areas.
Room Size & Living Room Area Rugs Selection
Y’all, this is so important! The size of your room should guide your rug choice. In my home, we’ve got a pretty big living room, so I went with a 9’ x 12’ rug to accommodate all our furniture.
For cozier rooms, you want to look at a 5’ x 8’ or 8’ x 10’.
Sometimes, going for a slightly larger rug in a small room can be a good idea. If you rent and the original flooring is not your style or if its condition is not a great, a larger area rug can be the perfect choice.

If you’ve got one of those open-concept spaces, using area rugs to define different areas is the smart thing to do. We did this in our house, using separate rugs to separate the living area from the dining space.
The “All Legs On” Rule
This one’s pretty straightforward, y’all. Ideally, you want all the legs of your furniture sitting pretty on that rug. It really ties the whole seating area together and makes everything feel more cohesive. I used this rule when choosing our current living room area rug and it made such a difference!
The “18-Inch Border” Rule
Here’s a nifty little trick: try to leave about 18 inches of your floor around the edges of your rug. This creates a visual frame for your rug and keeps the room from feeling too cramped. It’s all about balance, y’all!
The “Two-Thirds” Rule
As a general guideline, your rug should cover about two-thirds of your room’s floor space. This proportion just feels right to the eye and helps anchor your space without overwhelming it.
What to Do When You Need a Large Rug (But Can’t Afford It)
Now, I know we’re not all working with unlimited budgets here. If you can’t swing a rug big enough for all your furniture, here’s what you do: focus on getting at least the front legs of your largest piece of furniture on the rug.

For example, in one of our previous homes, we couldn’t fit a rug large enough for everything, so I made sure all the seating pieces had their front legs on the rug.
If you do this, just make sure to keep it consistent across the entire seating area.
This will make the design more cohesive and will pull the room together. But here’s the flip side – you don’t want a rug so big it swallows up the entire room. You still want to see some of that beautiful floor peeking out!
Living Room Area Rugs: Layered Option
If you’ve found a beautiful rug, that’s not quite the right size, layering can be a smart solution. When layering, place a smaller rug over a larger, more neutral one. I love using sisal or jute area rugs for this. The artificial jute or seaweed are sturdy, durable and so pretty and you can find larger sizes at lower costs.
They create a perfectly neutral foundation and also add an extra layer of texture. Just make sure the smaller rug isn’t too tiny for the space, or it might throw off balance the whole scale of your space’s design.
No matter how much you love a rug, if the size doesn’t work with your space and needs, it probably won’t work. But don’t despair!
If you can’t make it work in the living room, consider using that smaller rug in your entryway or hallway. Another option is to hang it as wall decor in your living room, adding a unique touch to your space. This creates such a collected touch to a living room!
How To Find The Right Size and Style In An Open Concept Living Room
In open layouts, the primary goal is to define visually the different sections within the same space. For this, you need to consider that there will be more than one rug interacting in the same space, so there needs to be a cohesive thread in both color and style.
This is a more nuanced topic as it depends a lot on each space and its specific characteristics. But, when picking the different rugs that will be in the same open space, make sure their styles are not wildly different.

The “All Legs On” Rule in Action
This living room is a great example of the “All Legs On” rule in action. The size of the rug is just right! It allows all the furniture to sit comfortably on it. Here, we can see the “18-Inch Border” rule at work. Notice how the rug leaves some hardwood floors visible around the edges? This creates a nice frame effect.

This living room shows how a smaller rug can work wonders in a large open space. Notice how it perfectly defines the seating area without making the room feel cluttered.
The rug’s size is just right – it’s large enough to fit about half of each seating piece, creating a cozy, intimate zone within the broader space. This partial furniture placement on the rug is a great compromise when you can’t fit all furniture legs on the rug, still achieving that pulled-together look we’re after.

Here we see a great example of how a rug’s shape and placement can work around the room’s structure! The rectangular rug mirrors the room’s shape and its orientation.
By running the length of the room it emphasizes the space’s clean lines, takes advantage of the narrow space while tieing the seating area together beautifully. Just imagine how the room would look with a smaller or squared rug. Totally off the scale!

With a white-on-white color scheme, the layered rugs in this modern farmhouse play an essential role that you may miss when you first look at it.
