Farmhouse or cottage? With this stunning southern North Carolina home tour, y’all don’t have to choose!
In today’s edition of our home tour series, we’re stepping inside a downtown charmer that recently went through a major remodel by the Collaborative Interior Design team.
The result has all the classic, all-American character of a farmhouse, with cozy rooms and intimate nooks that bring in that cottage feel.
And y’all know how much we love that here at Shabby!
Painted brick, cedar shakes, and a porch made for slow afternoons give just a hint of what’s waiting inside.
Whether you’re here for a little weekly inspiration or hoping to pick up a few ideas for your own space, this charming Southern home tour has plenty of both.
Come on in!
A Warm Welcome at the Front Door
Carrying an exterior color indoors is one of the simplest ways to make a home feel pulled together, and this entry does it so well.
The same sage green doors that welcome you from the porch set the tone inside, framed by a graceful arch and warm oak paneling that give the vestibule a snug, cottage-like feel. Step through the arch, and crisp white ceiling beams and shiplap bring in the farmhouse side of the story.
Down below, a dark tile floor handles the everyday comings and goings before giving way to wide-plank oak, and a brass console styled with white hydrangeas and a round convex mirror adds a welcoming touch that’s easy to borrow for your own entry.
A Kitchen Full of Warm Wood
Mixing a few different wood tones in one room can feel a little tricky, but this kitchen makes it look so easy!
Up above, rustic reclaimed beams and planks cover the ceiling and give the whole space that classic farmhouse character.
Rich wood cabinetry wraps the walls and the fridge, and cream painted uppers on either side of the window keep things light and balanced.
In the middle of it all, a generous island with a dark stone countertop gives the family plenty of room to cook and gather, and the leather counter stools are just the perfect finishing touch.
Take a closer look at the sink wall, too! A row of black swing-arm sconces sits above the window paired with a simple linen shade.
This is such a lovely idea to borrow if you want a little farmhouse charm at home!
A Sunny Spot for Breakfast
Who wouldn’t want to start the morning in a spot like this? Just off the kitchen, the breakfast nook is lined with tall windows that let the light pour in, and linen café curtains on slim black rods cover just the lower half of each one.
This curtain style is such a sweet and old-fashioned touch! It works just as well for privacy as it does for charm. It’s an easy idea to try at home, too, since café curtains only need a simple tension or mounted rod!
And I just love the chunky wood table with pegged legs anchoring the room! Surrounded The leather chairs surrounding it tie back so nicely to the counter stools in the kitchen.
All around, shiplap walls and a white globe pendant add that farmhouse feel we’ve been seeing throughout the home.
As a finishing touch, a big vase of white hydrangeas in the center of the table makes the whole space feel fresh and welcoming.
A Mudroom That Echoes the Entry
If the back door looks familiar, it’s because the same sage green from the front of the house makes another appearance here!
The mudroom repeats the dark brick-pattern tile from the entry too, so even this hardworking space feels jus as elevated as the rest of the home.
With the laundry tucked right next to the door, it’s a practical setup for busy days.
Keeping things bright and simple, we got beadboard walls paired with a row of black iron hooks. This is the perfect spot to store jackets, hats, and tote bags, too!
A Primary Bath with Room to Relax
Upstairs, the primary bathroom feels calm and bright, with shiplap walls and plenty of natural light. A freestanding tub sits right under the window, dressed with a woven shade above and a herringbone floor below.
The double vanity continues the warm wood we’ve seen throughout the home, this time in a light oak finish with black pulls.
Brass-framed mirrors and brass sconces with white shades hang above it, while wall-mounted bronze faucets keep the countertop clean and simple.
Mixing brass and bronze this way is an easy trick to borrow, and it keeps a bathroom from feeling too matchy!
A Bedroom Under the Roofline
Isn’t there something so cozy about a bedroom tucked under the roof? Here, the sloped ceiling is covered in pale wood planks, and a wooden ceiling fan keeps the look simple and natural.
Three windows line the far wall, each with a linen roman shade like the ones in the kitchen, and you can even catch a peek of the cedar shakes outside.
The dark wood bed grounds the room, layered with crisp white bedding and a chunky fringed throw that adds such stunning texture. A patterned rug with soft, vintage-style colors and a leather-seat bench at the foot of the bed finish the space.
If you want to warm up your own bedroom, a textured throw like this one is one of the easiest places to start!
A Powder Room with a Bold Surprise
A small room is the perfect place to take a design risk, and this powder room goes all in! A bold botanical wallpaper with a black background covers the upper walls, full of green leaves and pops of soft pink.
Below it, navy board paneling keeps the look grounded and gives the pattern a clean place to stop.
The dark speckled stone on the vanity top rises into a stepped backsplash, echoing the countertop on the kitchen island. A wall-mounted brass faucet with cross handles and a wavy brass mirror add a vintage feel, and the warm wood vanity ties it all back to the rest of the home.
Take a close look at the mirror, too! It reflects the oak paneling and round convex mirror from the entry, a sweet reminder of where our tour began.
