Decorating With Lace – Modern Home Style

Decorating with lace doesn’t have to be drab or old fashioned. We all search for that something new to add to our homes and often love fresh ideas. Are you trying to update and go more modern, yet stay with an aesthetic that speaks to your heart? Sometimes I think that modern decorating lacks the warmth and feeling that you really want in a home. Maybe you’ve thought about incorporating lace into your decorating arsenal? When we think of modern decorating, lace often doesn’t usually factor in.

Lace is ordinarily relegated to the areas of old movies, pearls, and antique teacups. The thing is, lace is not only beautiful, it can add in that warmth, that sense of beauty, and strip away some of the sterility that modern decorating can take on if we’re not careful.

Decorating with lace is going to require some creativity on your part. That doesn’t mean it is time to break out all of the lace curtains, doilies, and tablecloths your grandmother left you. If we aren’t careful in our choices, instead of using lace to add a pretty touch to a room, we’ll end up with a dated and dull looking room. It doesn’t have to be that way. Here are some amazing ideas to add lace to your room without being dull.

Tips for decorating with lace

Cover A Lampshade

One fantastic method for decorating with lace is to use it to add charm to a lampshade. The openwork allows your light to shine through while adding a touch of elegance to your light fixture. Use it on a pendant lamp to get a completely unique look. Add it to a lampshade and watch the pretty shapes and shadows it can cast into your room.

Add an Accent Rug

Modern Lace Print Large Jute Rug

Many rugs are incorporating elements of lace into their designs, and they look absolutely beautiful. This is lace completely reimagined; would you ever have been able to walk across your grandmother’s lace items? Probably not. A pretty rug is a great way to add personality to a room, and the lacework will really give you a great piece to work with.

Pretty Pillows

Lace Edge Pillow

Accent pillows are amazing pieces because you can switch them up and give your room a great restyle without having to change much. Add some new covers to your pillows – this would be a great way to repurpose some of the lace you have on hand. Add a strip of beautiful lace to a pillow, sew a doily on, and you have a piece that is now a source of conversation as well as an element of beauty in your room.

Creative Canvas

Lace Dream Catchers

If you want to get really fancy, take some time to peruse all of the beautiful canvas that has lace elements in it. With the reemergence of mandalas and dreamcatchers, it was only a matter of time until lace came back to the forefront. Choose soft colors to accent your pieces, and you’re going to find that they look absolutely stunning on display, nothing like the heavy lace pieces of yore. You can even frame a lace piece you already have, and put it completely on display. These are miniature works of art you already have on hand, don’t be afraid to use them.

  1. Is the comforter in this post the one on your website through amazon?

    1. No…the one on my bed was much more pricey and is from Shabby Chic Couture. Gave a less expensive alternative in the Amazon shop 😉

  2. Hi Janet,
Beautiful images! I especially love the Jute Rug and dreamcatchers! Those even have my favorite colors weaved into the lace. It’s funny because I’m not really attracted to lace, but I have been loving the dreamcatchers, mandalas, and I just bought lace cutout chargers for my Easter table. I definitely will be saving up for that jute rug! Thank you for sharing! Blessings to you!

    1. I have made dreamcatchers over the years and they look great with lace ribbon streamers hanging down! Have a wonderful week Babette.

  3. HI Janet, what a fun post and great ideas! It was fun to see you used one of our photos in your collage. The upper left photo is of Lacey’s kitchen 🙂

    1. Your home is so lovely Kim and so is Lacey’s! xo

  4. Who says lace is dull? I love doilies…not all over, but I have on my sideboard in the dining room under my silver tray that holds an Easter centerpiece. Lace atop a dark wood is a nice “pop.” Of course my whole is “English Tradiitonal” (I think)…I just love vintage and antiques and since I like the “cluttered”, layered, stacked, displayed look (which is described in “English Country”) lace is very desirable, especially the hand crocheted tablecloths, which is a passion. Old crocheted lace is getting harder to find. Maybe that is the reason it is labeled “old” and dull. Sometimes I think decorating fads are what is “easy” and “at hand.” I hunted and was patient to find my decor.

    1. Sounds like you have some beautiful collections gained over time Sherry!

    1. They are my favorite plates and everyone who has been served on them LOVES them! xo

  5. Funny you brought this up, I was cruising old vintage tablecloths on eBay last night. Very well priced. I got rid of the embroidered linen and lace ones I had years ago, because of the horrid ironing, but cotton is ok. I can visualise dyeing one of those a soft pastel, thanks to your idea.

Been thinking of you this week, take care, Cath from Aus.

    1. Thanks Cath…your kind thoughts are appreciate. I have died old tablecloths and they are fun to repurpose!
