salted caramel apple tart

If you’re anything like me, I am busy running here and there and sometimes forget about dessert. Not to mention that with our nest now empty we don’t keep sweets around as much. I’ll usually only make something sweet once a week and this is a big hit when I do. The combination of flaky crust, tart apples, sweet caramel (this is the hack) and salty bacon is heaven on the tongue. I’ve made it easy with some pantry and fridge ingredients that are usually on hand. Before I go further, thank you to my sweet friend Kristen of Ella Claire Inspired for inviting me to this awesome apple recipe event!

salted caramel apple tart dulche de leche

Are you familiar with dulche de leche? Living in Miami with lots of latina friends, I was introduced to this sweet treat years ago in eating flan. Dulche de leche tastes quite similar to caramel and is made by a couple of different methods. I’ve seen it done in an instant pot by boiling a can of sweetened condensed milk for a couple of hours. The work is taken out with the La Lechera that you can find at many grocery stores.

It takes just around 1/2 hour or so to make, including prep time. I like to use Granny Smith apples, but any of your favorite apples will do. My preferred sugar is coconut sugar, a low glycemic sugar made from coconut sap. I use coconut sugar in all of my baking and have noticed no difference in taste from using refined sugar. Not only is it better for you, but in baking you can use less because it’s sweeter.

The tart is best served warm. If eating for dessert add a dollop of whipped cream or a scoop of vanilla ice cream or both!
