Gentle decorating tips for your home are simple ways to get out of a boring home rut. I do them all the time in my own home by the tips I’m sharing below. Mixing things up once in a while can become a challenge for us because human beings love to be comfortable. Why? There’s security in the familiar, a sameness that lets us feel for once like we are in control of life.

Changes in life so often come at us when we least expect it: a move we didn’t plan for, a divorce, a change in finances, downsizing, even a pandemic. When we are faced with these, having something that is within our control feels really great.

Making Changes

Here’s the problem – sameness can become awfully boring over a period of time. The sameness of our surroundings can become SO familiar that we sometimes fail to notice the beauty or appreciate the time we have put into making everything look beautiful. As time passes, it’s not unusual to become blind to our home, it’s furnishings, and sometimes objects that we treasure. Though it doesn’t seem like much, this is where dissatisfaction can begin to take root in our daily lives. When our surroundings start to blend into the background, we have begun to find them dull. Once they’re dull, it’s exciting to switch it up! These changes don’t have to be dramatic, in fact, the old cliche “little things mean a lot” is completely appropriate for this situation.

7 Gentle Decorating Tips

  1. Try a new color on your walls – The walls in our rooms take up an incredible amount of space, and our eyes immediately go to them. If you want to make a huge change without turning the whole house around, a great place to start is with changing the colors on your wall. Pick something in the same color family, or go dramatically different depending on your mood. Either way, you’re going to have a room with a whole new mood.

  2. Change your throw pillows– You may not be ready to change all of your furnishings, but that doesn’t mean you can’t make them look completely different. Change your throw pillows and throws in a room, and your furnishings will look totally new without you making a commitment to a whole new set of furniture.

  3. Switch your artwork – Whether you go out and purchase new, or grab something from another room, switching your artwork up will bring a whole new look to your room.

  4. Add different accessories – Have you considered a new vase? Do you have cabinetry that could benefit from new hardware? These small touches can create a totally different space. Don’t be afraid to change them up.

  5. Introduce some plants – Adding plants to a room can bring them to life – literally! If you haven’t got any plants in your room, add a few that are pretty but also easy to take care of.

  6. Lighting– Changing up the lighting sources in the room, even just changing the lampshades can make everything look brand new. Don’t be afraid to switch up the lighting in the room, it can really make a difference.

  7. Drapes– Changing the drapes in the room will give your space a new personality. When you take the time to change the colors of the drapery, you can give the room an entirely different feel.

  1. Love these tips, Janet! That is exactly what I’m doing in these next weeks. Changing my walls by painting them lighter and brighter. I’m fond of an accent wall, so I’m doing that in a couple of the rooms. Take care and my thoughts are with you during this time.

  2. Great points and I am adding French touches to our home more and more. Slower process since I want what I love. Rush and make rash purchases. Been there done that, not this time

  3. These are great tips Janet. I think with Spring approaching we are all wanting to lighten and brighten up our decor. So thank you for sharing these great ideas. Sending prayers to you and your family as you grieve the loss of your sweet mom. I am so sorry for your loss. Hoping the memories of your mom will help you in the days to come. Time does not make the pain and loss go away but it does have a way of making it more tolerable. I am hoping that for you and your family.

  5. Janet,
So sorry to hear you lost your mom, you have mentioned many times how she was doing and times you were spending with her. Itā€™s a big task to adjust to, but each day it gets a bit easier as you find ways to deal with the loss. I found it helped to find photos showing happy times with her and keep them front and center (vs the struggles towards the end.)

  6. I know what I will be doing tomorrow. Using these wonderful tips. Thanks fr sharing.
