Scandinavian-inspired bleached blonde, weathered grey, neutral taupe wood… All these shades were once the most trendy hardwood flooring options in interior design yet with the designers rediscovering their love for all things brown, we have a new shade that’s taking the decor world by storm: Brunette flooring!

If y’all scroll through Instagram or flip through the latest issue of Architectural Digest, y’all know what I mean. We’re seeing these gorgeous deep wood tones taking center stage everywhere.

From cozy artisan bungalows to sleek modern builds, brunette flooring is proving to be the versatile option that transforms any room into a design statement space.

Unlike some trends that feel totally out of reach, brunette flooring works for just about any home style you can imagine!

If y’all love your coastal and French farmhouse home decor just as much as I do, y’all understand why I was quite resistant to this trend. The idea of brown flooring took me back to images from the past where the brown shades everywhere had this overwhelming and almost artificial tint of orange and yellow that seemed to take over any color palette.

But after getting my daily dose of inspiration from designers I love, like the team at McGee, the brunette flooring started to grow on me.

And that’s the thing, y’all. This brunette flooring revival is so interesting because of how different it is from the dark floors of decades past. Today’s brunette flooring brings that high-end warmth without heaviness, sophistication without stuffiness, and – perhaps most importantly—it creates that perfect backdrop for literally any design style you’re dreaming of.

Whether you’re thinking about a flooring upgrade or just love staying on top of home trends, you’re going to want to keep reading about why this classic choice is having such a major moment in 2025.

Why Brunette Flooring Is Having a Moment?

After years of chasing every new trend that popped up on social media, more and more homeowners are craving spaces that feel timeless and intentional. Even the most color-loving people, who once wouldn’t have dreamed of dark floors, are falling for these rich wood tones.

But why is that? Well, that’s the magic behind brunette flooring! If you love color and eye-catching accents, brunette flooring actually makes those bold color choices pop even more, and adds an instant dose of sophistication.

There’s a reason brunette flooring is more than just a trending hashtag, y’all. Let’s dive into the practical benefits that make these floors such a smart choice for modern homes.

One of the greatest things about brunette flooring is its longevity when it comes to hiding daily wear.

Scratches from moving furniture, kids’ toys, paw-prints… those are just inevitable in any home. But all those scrapes and rasps are far less noticeable in deeper wood tones. On the downside, lighter floors tend to look way cleaner while dark ones show every speck of dust when the light hits it.

Unlike trendy finishes that can quickly date a home, brunette flooring in classic darker shades has an amazing staying power that makes it a smart investment choice.
The richness and timeless character of this flooring option is a favorite among future buyers because it works with such a wide range of design styles.

Which leads me to my favorite part about the brunette flooring trend; Versatility!

This shade of floors makes for such a gorgeous contrast in modern spaces with clean lines, while also complementing the character of historic homes. Because brunette flooring gives an instant flair of sophistication and a high-end vibe, it adapts to any home decor style. Minimalist, industrial, coastal, shabby chic… you name it!

It also pairs beautifully with tons of distinct elements, so mixing and matching your decor styles won’t be a problem. Personally, I’m in love with how beautiful they look against natural textures like jute, linen, and marble!

Now, let’s talk about specific rooms where brunette flooring makes the most impact.

In living rooms, brunette flooring can help create a solid foundation, grounding larger furniture pieces while adding warmth to the space. The deeper tones actually make artwork and decorative elements stand out more clearly against the floor, creating natural focal points throughout the room.

If you have a lot of white in your living room, brunette flooring makes even more sense! The white will usually reflect in shiny dark floors which will only enhance the airy feel of the room, but always keeping that grounded feel.

Home offices are also one of those rooms to try the brunette flooring trend. Here, you can play up the formality of a dark hardwood floor a bit more, with the darker tones giving it a more intimate and sophisticated feel.

It can also create a more defined and purposeful space, especially if you pair it with lighter desk furniture for some extra contrast.

In bedrooms, this flooring trend can be so stunning! When paired with proper lighting, brunette flooring can make bedrooms have that extra warmth throughout the room to make it feel uber cozy, yet still maintain a contemporary and glam style.

Styling Brunette Flooring

When it comes to bringing the most out of brunette flooring, thoughtful styling makes all the difference. While these deep mocha hues set the tone immediately, the real beauty of brunette flooring happens in how you build upon it.

With dark wood underfoot, color palettes take an even more important role than usual. Soft whites and warm neutrals are by far one of my favorite color combinations as they bring an airy brightness that perfectly balances the depth below.

If you love a room with moody vibes, the combo of deep navy walls and brunette flooring is the way to go. This pairing makes a statement, creating an unmistakable sense of luxury in any room.

And here’s a surprise—blush pink and sage green look stunning against darker wood, adding an unexpected softness that keeps rooms feeling current.

The furniture you choose plays an equally important role in your space. Rather than matching wood tones, which can feel heavy and overwhelming, opt for varied textures and materials that create visual interest. You should go for natural wood pieces in lighter or darker hues than your floors to create an intentional contrast. Another crucial factor?

Choose furniture with legs. This simple detail creates a lot of breathing room between your pieces and those gorgeous floors.

Y’all know I’m a huge enthusiast about the importance of lighting and it’s an essential element when we talk about brunette flooring. The right -or wrong- lighting can transform how we experience dark flooring throughout the day.

In spaces where sunlight is limited, strategic lighting is your greatest ally! It can highlight subtle grain patterns, brightening light fabrics and bringing warmth to deeper tones.

By combining overhead fixtures with wall sconces and table lamps, you’ll eliminate harsh shadows while creating an inviting ambiance that showcases your floors’ natural beauty.

And don’t y’all forget your rug selection! Here, texture and scale have to be your guiding principles. Natural fiber rugs add a wonderful dimension without competing with the wood’s inherent beauty, but subtle patterns in high-traffic areas are also fantastic for disguising daily wear. One common mistake? Choosing rugs that are too small!

Generous sizing creates a more balanced look, allowing your dark floors to serve as a sophisticated frame rather than overwhelming the space. For more info about rug sizing, CLICK HERE to read my in-depth guide.

Whether in a sleek modern space or a character-filled historic home, brunette flooring adapts beautifully while maintaining a timeless appeal. Another huge plus of this floor trend is that it gets better with age, giving it even more character that only adds to its charm.

  1. As long as it isn’t orange or yellow hued I would like it. I do see how it would age better than lighter tones. I also agree about rug choice is super important if you don’t want to go dark.

Totally agree, avoiding orange or yellow tones is key! Darker floors age better and hide wear more than lighter ones. And yes, the right rug makes all the difference. It adds warmth and contrast without going too dark. 😊

I have dark laminate flooring all throughout my house. I fell in love with the color but they. are so hard to keep clean. Any tips on how to clean dark floors.

    1. Kassandra says:

I totally get what you mean! Dark laminate floors can be stunning but can show dust, pet hair, and fingerprints a little more easily. Here are a few tips that might help:

Dust and Sweep Often: Use a microfiber mop or a broom to pick up dust and debris regularly. Microfiber is great at trapping dust, so it won’t just push it around.

Use a Damp Mop: For a deeper clean, use a damp (not soaking) microfiber mop with a mild cleaner that’s safe for laminate. Be sure to avoid harsh chemicals or wax, as they can damage the finish.

Spot Clean: If you notice spots or streaks, wipe them up right away with a soft cloth. Sometimes a little vinegar mixed with water (in a 1:10 ratio) can help with stubborn spots.

Consider a Shine: If your floors are looking a little dull, a laminate floor polish could help restore some shine, just be careful not to overdo it!

It can feel like a lot of work, but once you find a routine, it gets easier! Hope that helps! Let me know if you need any more tips!

  3. Love it!! So many pretty examples. It makes me happy to see a current ‘trend’ that I used before it was the ‘trend’, just because I loved it. I’m a very amateur decorator, so it helps my confidence 😉.

    1. Kassandra says:

That’s awesome! It’s so fun to see what you love come back around as a trend. Trust your instincts, your style is clearly spot on! And being an amateur decorator just means you’re still experimenting and finding what works for you, which is such a fun part of the process. You’ve got this! 😊

  4. We had “brunette” floors installed in our latest house that we built in 2019. I absolutely love them!!! We have creamy colored walls and furniture with a few dark wood accents and it all flows together so beautifully. I’ve always loved neutral shades so this is a win win for me! I add color with throw pillows and accent pieces. It’s so peaceful and relaxing plus the darker wood floors do not show dirt as much as you might expect.

    1. Kassandra says:

Your space sounds absolutely beautiful! It’s amazing how well neutral shades can come together to create a peaceful, relaxing vibe. I love that you’re adding pops of color with throw pillows and accent pieces. It’s the perfect way to keep it fresh and personal. And yes, dark wood floors are such a win when it comes to hiding dirt! Sounds like you’ve really nailed the balance. 😊
