Now, let’s take explore some of her stunning work…
Designer Spotlight: Cathy Kincaid – Comfortable Elegance
With thoughtful arrangements of pattern, texture, and bespoke pieces, Cathy Kincaid reimagines each space as a fresh, modern composition with refined comfortable elegance nods to the past.

Expertly layering stunning antique pieces with contemporary accents, Cathy Kincaid’s creates lavish spaces that ooze sophistication, charm and are one-of-a-kind.

With a touchstone appreciation for the heritage of historic homes, her creations bring back the original comfortable elegance grandeur of past eras while welcoming the present through a curated mix of current aesthetics.
“One of the things I love about restoring houses is the value of ‘the mix.’ It is the one aspect of design that I adhere to—the old with the new, the ornate with the simple, the refined with the rustic. This approach expresses the personality of the client and charms their guests.”
– Kincaid
Kincaid’s projects feel like a fresh take on old-world elegance, yet there’s a nostalgic quality that remains. Almost like the perfect balance of traditional charm and modern whimsy.

We can see this quality in action in the rooms of her Preston Hallow Estate project. Here, the room compositions are classic and traditional but far from matchy-matchy.

There’s tension in the color palette that breaks apart monotony and highlights the beautiful bones of the home. She takes some design risks with pattern, but it pays off! Refer to this recent article that might help YOU to mix and match patterns with confidence in YOUR home!
Layered with a mix of patterned textiles and furniture pieces traditional in style, the color scheme and accents bring the home into the present.

Preserving the past while embracing modernity is a Kincaid signature. For example, in the Volk Estate project, she achieves this beautifully.

She dressed the historical rooms in classic ivory, green, and blue hues, with a curated mix of antiques like porcelain plates, ginger jars, and striking artwork alongside contemporary rattan seating and vibrant patterned textiles on upholstery and rugs. This is not an easy feat to accomplish!

These rooms have a strong traditional European influence, yet never feel stuffy with Kincaid’s fresh perspective. They exude that comfortable elegance that she is known for in the design world.

The Connecticut River House epitomizes Kincaid’s talent for creating traditional spaces with a fresh and whimsical spirit.

She leans into the home’s cottage aesthetic but elevates the comfortable elegance through delightful layers of pattern, texture, and vintage finds.

Playful wallpaper patterns get cheekily reprised on curtains, while antique accents and furnishings add an air of collected charm.

The kitchen pantry walls set a nostalgic tone with their vintage-inspired wallpaper pattern.

Dipped in serene blues and classic furniture silhouettes, the bedroom strikes a tranquil mood. The lush fabric canopy turns the bed into a dreamy focal point.

Another of her projects, the French Country Residence, is one of my ultimate favorites. There’s an alluring mix of European and Asian influences perfectly offset with refined country elements and neutral hues.

An Asian-inspired framed scenic piece and decorative porcelain plates in pretty motifs complement each other and set the tone of the space. The gentle green-hued crown and base moldings frame the architectural bones, allowing the elegant decor to take center stage.

This charming sitting room is the ideal spot for sipping tea and reading, don’t you agree? Utilizing vintage and antique furnishings adds a comforting homey touch.
Swathed in light blues and cool greys with French provincial furniture and reclaimed weathered antiques, the dining room is the French country style at its best.

The framed illustrations form a panel that adds an artisan quality to the room and makes it feel less formal.

White and blue porcelain plates, along with unexpected pattern combinations, are sprinkled throughout almost every room, making every part of the home feel utterly unique.

Aren’t all these homes just fabulous? And who wouldn’t love to have a scullery or butler’s pantry like the one below?!

I adore the smart use of patterns and colors in every design! Which home design was your favorite? What do you think of her mission to create comfortable elegance in all of her designs?
