1915 Dutch Colonial Home Tour: Colonial Home Decor Gets a Modern Refresh

New England and its surroundings have no shortage of beautiful old homes, so it was no surprise to find myself on Saturday morning, virtually daydreaming about the stunning houses appearing on my Instagram feed.

One stood out from the rest, though. I stumbled across this 1915 Dutch Colonial in Winchester and just couldn’t help but feature it in our home tour edition!

I mean, I’m a goner for any renovation that manages to modernize while keeping the soul of a historical home, and this one is a beautiful example of just that.

The owners worked with Cummings Architecture + Interiors to tackle the dream project—keeping all the character that makes an old house special while making it function for real family life.

We’re talking mudrooms that handle the everyday chaos, flow that works for families, and spaces that keep their historical authenticity while making room for the comfort features modern life requires.

The result is one of those rare renovations that improves on the original without losing what made it worth saving in the first place!

I just love how it manages to look like it’s been loved for over a century while somehow feeling completely fresh and comfortable.

Another key thing I loved about this home tour is how the designers used the home’s original bones to weave in colonial decor without making it feel out of place.

Plus, all the autumn decor vibes sprinkled throughout make me feel so excited for the upcoming cozy season.

There are so many ideas that are simple enough to replicate, yet have so much visual impact! And I’m so excited to share them with y’all.

Now, grab a tall glass of iced tea (is it too soon for a pumpkin spice latte?) and let’s start the tour!

1915 Dutch Colonial Home Tour: Colonial Home Decor Gets a Modern Refresh

With its classic structure, this covered porch is exactly what I picture in my head when I think of New England charm with a smart dose of modern comfort.

That warm wood ceiling is doing all the heavy lifting here—it adds this gorgeous natural warmth against all the crisp white trim and creates such a cozy feeling overhead.

Y’all know I love white porches, but sometimes the result can be a bit too stark. Which is why I absolutely adore the use of the wood planking! It brings warmth and makes the whole porch feel so much more grounded and inviting!

Walking through gorgeous double doors and swimming in natural light, there’s the entryway. This sophisticated foyer establishes a transitional take on colonial home decor with a more toned-down style.

It’s a stunning balance between some of the old-world grandeur of the original 1915 architecture with a more relaxed and lived-in feel.

The staircase itself is absolutely stunning—white painted spindles against the rich wood handrail and treads create a lovely contrast that feels so authentically colonial.

The living room feels open and breathable the moment you walk in; it’s just pure transitional perfection, y’all!

The color story ties the colonial home decor with its mix of neutral tones, dark accents, and tons of layered textures that make everything flow together naturally.

Dutch Colonial Home Decor Kitchen Gets a Modern Refresh

Keeping the best traffic flow, creating visual lines, connecting the spaces without imposing…

For all their benefits, open-concept kitchens can pose some tricky issues. But this kitchen? It shows us exactly the right way to do it!

With its greyish blue hue, the island sets up a soft boundary between the cooking area and the living room.

This keeps the spaces connected but gives each space enough privacy to work independently.

Spacious and grounded, the kitchen works with a similar color story and materials that play into the colonial home decor.

Black and brass fixtures, wooden floating shelves, and texture-rich elements like rattan work together against an all crisp white backdrop.

Elegant & Serene Bedroom With Timeless Colonial Home Decor

The primary bedroom keeps the same beautiful transitional vibe we’ve been seeing throughout the house, but dials up the serenity factor. Wrapped in soft linen, the upholstered headboard makes for a dreamy focal point in this room. I love the simplicity! It’s in perfect balance with the room’s clean lines.

What I’m really obsessing over is how they balanced the black elements—the sleek dresser and barn door hardware—against all the white and natural wood tones. It’s moody without being heavy, but open enough to make it feel airy. Just the vibe you want in a bedroom!

Okay, y’all! This closet has gotta be one of my favorite spots on this home tour. It’s giving me all kinds of inspiration!

I love how detailed the organization system is.

With the built-ins going in all the way to the ceiling and a good mix of open shelving and closed storage, not an inch of space is wasted.

Closets so perfectly designed can veer towards boutique-like territory, but the colonial home decor elements add their personal touch here, too.

The rich oranges and blues of the rug play so beautifully against all that crisp white, and it makes the space feel grounded and intentional.

Cute & Practical Home Office Nook

This little workspace tucked under the stairs is exactly why smart design is so important in family homes!

Instead of letting that space go to waste, the team created a perfectly bespoke desk area that works for both adults and little ones.

Airy Bathroom with Colonial Home Decor Accents

Just off the primary bedroom, the bathroom continues the same approach to mixing warm and cool elements we’ve been seeing throughout the house.

I really like how they’ve mixed contemporary simplicity with rustic touches.

The way the warm wood countertop breaks up all that white is such a pretty look!

A Stylish & Smart Mudroom Design

Right off that gorgeous covered porch, we find this insanely pretty mudroom.

The use of a deep forest green for the built-ins is such a practical idea! Besides creating a rich backdrop, it is also brilliant at hiding away everyday wear and tear.

The geometric floor tile plays so beautifully with that Persian rug we saw earlier in the entryway. It’s that same layered approach to pattern and texture that makes the colonial home decor feel so cohesive throughout!
