Today I’m sharing the 10 Spring Cleaning Tips You Need To Know (scroll down) because I’ve been doing a lot of spring cleaning over here! But first…I have a question for you.

I was very lucky to get this vintage cabinet on FBMP for FREE this past week! Can you say, SCORE 😁 🙌🏻 A lovely lady in my area was downsizing from a home to a condo and tried to sell it, but apparently had no takers. My question to you is what color do you think I should paint this piece? While it’s quite lovely as is, it’s just too dark for my Miami coastal inspired home decor! I plan on using it in my living room along a large wall that you don’t normally see. More storage is always needed here and below is her image from the listing. So…What color would you think I should paint this and PLEASE…be nice, no paint hate comments will be published! I know that it’s a subject many feel strongly about, but I do plan on painting it 😉

  1. PALE BLUE
  2. NAVY BLUE
  3. WHITE

      pale blue chalk paint

      1. I think Duck Egg Blue woul be beautiful! White would be lovely too
What a fabulous find! Please keep us posted 😊.

      2. Since it is a commanding presence I would paint it navy. This piece is STUNNING!

  2. Either pale blue or white would be lovely! White would definitely be the most versatile for any future color you wish to pair with it. What a gorgeous piece of furniture!! I believe it will be even more gorgeous when it is painted.

  3. I agree with the first two comments! Pale blue or white, but I aways lean towards white!

  4. Donna Marie says:

I would paint it pale blue to go with you coastal theme. You got a piece of a lifetime girly!!!

  5. Wow Janet! What an amazing find! I definitely would paint in pale blue! I just feel it would go really well with your home’s esthetic and decor! Love this and can’t wait to see it in its new color!

    1. I think white with navy inside the doors would offset your floral dishes nicely.

  6. I would never paint a piece like that.

  7. I think all three are beautiful colours . For me , it would depend upon what is going inside the cabinet and if the cabinet is to be a subtle focus or a strong focus . Have fun with your painting .

  8. Why not add a pop of bold color with the navy blue. I would look great with some gold hardware and provide a nice contrast against the lighter colors in your decor.

  9. How about chalk paint white, and line the interior back wall with a peel and stick blue themed wallpaper? When you are ready for a change, you can just swap out the wallpaper and not have to repaint. Great score!

  10. annie heulle says:

I think pale blue (norvegian blue)

  11. Marie Denice Kromer says:

    Hi Janet,
Wow…. I would paint the piece Navy and paint the wood trim on the glass cabinet doors white…so it gives a nod to lattice. I would also change up the knobs. Have fun and I can not wait to see the finished piece. Kindly, Marie

  12. How about trying to limewash or bleach it to a light feeling piece , especially for your house on the coast. Plus I want to watch how you do, I need to do my kitchen cabinets, and would love to see the process.

  13. I inherited a similar breakfront that was my first decorating playground, courtesy of my patient mother, who allowed me to change the display often. Mine now holds chinoiserie, antique books, boxes, & a collection of wooden carved birds. I would love to paint the inside back but have kept the wood finish thus far. It’s lovely to see the Chinese Chippendale influence in yours as well. The colors mentioned would be lovely, or something like AS Paris Gray. AS books also have lots of inspiration for painting pieces like these. They are versatile & can be styled spare & simply elegant or more like a cabinet de curiosité. I don’t envy you the task but cannot wait to see the beautiful end result!

  14. Mary Metcalf says:

I just painted a bed side table navy blue and it is gorgeous! I used Dixie Belle chalk paint. The color is so rich! My vote is navy!!!

  15. Deborah Broughton says:

I like the pale blue or white. Or try a driftwood color finish . There are a lot of ideas for how tos for the driftwood finish on Pinetrest. I am determined to try it on something!
    Lucky you!

  16. Donna Leigh says:

What a blessed find for you! Pale blue with gold hardware would be amazing! Can’t wait to see it!

  17. Pale blue and use some self stick wallpaper on the inside back. I agree it is a tough call to paint a high quality piece of furniture like this but it will have a key place in your living area vs being abused / discarded.

A light gray might also look nice.

  18. I am leaning towards Annie Sloan French linen, neutral but it depends on your colors in the room. Old white is nice too, I would not make it bright white. Also, I painted a smaller , similar cabinet multiple colors and covered the inside back of cabinet with wallpaper. It took a long time but it’s worth it. You can see it on pinterest, chalk painted furniture.

  19. Betty J Saunders says:

Pale blue, though I personally would have chosen a pale grey.

  20. Mar Burke says:

Navyblue! I love Chinoiserie so I’d paint it coral or hot pink..to display your huge collection Blue-white pieces..

    1. Mar Burke says:

      My collection,sorry

  21. Definitely a pale blue if it goes with your current coastal color theme. I lived at the shore for years and white and pale blue were my choices. Now I’m in Florida and pale pinks rule by life!

  22. I agree. Navy Blue with beautiful brass pulls. Maybe highlight back os cab8net with pale blue. Navy is dramatic and so is this beautiful china cabinet.

  23. Sharon Millsap says:

Such a lovely piece! Paint the exterior white & the interior navy. Or line the back of the interior with a navy & white pattern wallpaper or fabric. Also like the driftwood idea.

  24. My first reply had several spelling errors. Typing on a tablet stinks. Navy blue with beautiful brass pull would make a statement with this cabinet. Paint the back of the cabinet with pale ethereal blue to show off your lovely interior display items. Good luck with your project.

  25. linda of no.cal. says:

So pretty… what a deal… blue or white.

  26. Ninia James says:

Pale blue….maybe a shade of duck egg 🙂

  27. Sharon, above, has a wonderful idea. White with navy blue interior. It would be different, but stunning.

  28. Mary Ann McCarty says:

Pale blue or white depending on hue of wall behind it. Question, what color is the outside of your house and trim color?

  29. I would paint it white.
And display pale blue and white dishes.

  30. Definitely navy blue!

  31. Judy Becker says:

I would buy three samples: your favorite shade of blue, navy and why not try aqua. Paint on a little bit of each one and live with it for a week or as long as it takes. Eventually get rid of the one you dislike the most and later the next one that doesn’t go as well in your room. You should be left with a WINNER! Have fun painting.
    Love your blog!

  32. Score, indeed! I love that piece … it’s a good thing I don’t live in the area. I would have PAID for it! LOL

You won’t like my immediate reaction to painting it. I would strip the finish (or have it stripped – I mean, it was already free, right? LOL), and then whitewash it. I love formal pieces that have been whitewashed, as that way the wood grain still shows through in places.

Well, you asked for our two cents’ worth, didn’t you? LOL

Looking forward to your finished piece in place in your living room.

  33. I love the idea of pale blue but the piece is very large so I vote navy blue. White would be a go to color, but paler colors are pretty on smaller pieces. Too, with navy colorful dishes will pop. I can’t wait to see what you do.

  34. Christina Klein says:

I have been looking at painting furniture with other colours other than white. I have a similar cabinet and am painting it with a wash of blue. Have you though of stripping it? I guess that would be a lot more work. It is a lovely piece!

  35. Navy Blue, I think the other two colors would lessen the rich beauty of the piece

  36. Anita Hardy says:

When I first saw the piece and before I saw your color choices, my first thought was pale blue, would be gorgeous and beachy.

  37. Pale Blue is my vote – Can’t wait to see what you do with this piece 🙂

  38. Pale blue – in keeping with aquatic colours you’ve already got going.

  39. Miche Ortega says:

I would say white off the bat, but with you having a tremendous amount of white in your home, maybe the pale blue would be a bit of a pop. What a lucky find.

  40. Victoria Allen says:

I think a shabby chic white with blue showing through. I love almost everything you do, so whatever you choose will be awesome.

  41. Navy blue would be stunning!

  42. Pale blue for sure! Like a Robin egg blue, but a little bit lighter. It will go with everything. I think navy is nice, but very dark. If you did it that dark, you might as well keep it in the dark wood. I have a huge armoire and it’s the lighter blue and it’s so pretty. I love it.

  43. Go Navy! What a great piece. I think it would be stunning in any colour but navy would really make a wow statement in your decor.

  44. White with some blue items inside, I feel the cabinet is to big for a blue color. Could it overwhelm the space? 😊

  45. Beautiful China cabinet!! I wouldn’t paint it but I would have it refinished to the natural wood. Hoping it’s walnut!!

  46. Terry Mogan says:

I would paint it white and paint the inside pale blue.

  47. I would paint the wall behind it a pale blue and let the piece speak for itself as is. It looks to be a fine example of beautiful workmanship with a terrific finish. Also, whatever you put inside to display could be all the color accents that you would need (you could change these out for different seasons). Your table and chairs are the perfect complement for a unified look.

  48. mikki parker says:

    I would go with white

  49. Definitely white. Whatever you display inside will look lovely. Don’t cause problems with a color that you would like to display and it would clash. White goes with any color!

  50. Hi Janet!
I love this cabinet! A barely there blue or white would be my choice. I’ll be excited to see what you decide to do! It will be beautiful either way, and can’t wait to see it finished! 💞

  51. Pale Blue with satin finish silver hardware
Square knobs and bar handles. Chic!

  52. Hi Janet,
What a score! If it was me I would go for white, you can always add colour with the contents you choose and it is easier to swap the colours out that way and I notice you do that at least seaonally :-). Maybe a winter white but nothing with a yellow tone, someting with a black or tan base.
Can’t wait to see it aLL finished!

  53. Becky scheller says:

My grandmother had one exactly like yours. Passed to my mother and then out of the family. I have the Havilane chine 63 piece set that was in it. While I probably would not paint it it would be pretty in a pale color I think. French blue maybe.

  54. I would paint it white! Just to mention it, I have a china cabinet that has a dark finish on it just like that one. It suits my grandmother’s sideboard, and no painting is in the plan here, though I LOVE white cabinetry!

  55. My vote is strip all the varnish and color down to the wood, sand it well. Stain it a nice light tan for the under layer. When that is completely dry, paint it white. Before the white is dry wipe it off. You’ll get a nice beachy white with tan undertones showing through.

  56. Great find! I would do white or pale blue..part of me is leaning towards pale blue because I think it would be a fun complement to some of the existing decor and art you have throughout your beach house. Would it be a cooler pale blue or one with aqua or mint understones? What color makes your the most happy when you visualize it on the furniture? I’m sure whatever you choose will be beautiful!

  57. Melanie Arnst says:

Pale blue with white inside or vice versa:)

  58. Eleanor P Cartwright says:

Pale blue outside – soft white on the inside

  59. Navy blue – it’s a classic!

  60. I would remove the the patterned inserts on the doors (though they are beautiful) and paint the cabinet a very pale duck egg blue with an interior of linen white. Then I would give the hardware a makeover with Rub-n-Buff in pewter. It will give the entire piece a wonderful coastal softness. Sure wish I could include a photo. 😉 Can’t wait to see what you decide!

  61. If you are looking for a statement piece, why not do BOTH light blue and navy accents or the other way around. If left where it is, I wouldn’t do white (which would be nice) since it’s on a white wall. Either other color would be beautiful depending on where you want to put it. Love the piece by the way!! You really scored girl – go for it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  62. Lea Riley says:

I would love to see the room it will be in before I decide!

  63. Hey Janet,
Our house came nicely furnished when we lived in Province. We were not far from great sources of water & sunshine, so You can imagine the beautiful upholstery, painted walls, different colored ceilings & floors in the children’s bedrooms. In the dining area was a very large china cabinet that was painted a medium Coral. I was stunned when I first saw it, wondering why they would have painted this lovely piece There was NOT a shade of brown anywhere in the house, everything sang of happiness as well as uplifting the soul, I loved that uplifting when I became an actual citizen & saw others nomes–they all sang of the pure pleasure of being a beauty. I realize that You have Not mentioned Coral as a color but I wanted to throw it into the mix. You too are near water,—–think about this new neighbor as someone who marches to their own beautiful drum!

    1. I can only imagine how wonderful and enchanting that must have been Barbara! I have to be honest that I’m not a fan of coral, but it is heavily used as an accent in Miami where I live!
