Welcome to the home of Ellen of the stunning Instagram account Featherglass. I fell in love with her style and have followed her there since she first started sharing her home. The exterior is stunning with its stone wall, grey painted siding and lots of windows and French doors letting in the light.

Ellen lives in New England around 10 miles North of Boston. She shares her renovated 1920’s bungalow with her husband, their 17 year old daughter and a pair of West Highland Terriers. You’ll sometimes see her dogs in her rooms and they seem to match her decor!

Since it’s summer there is an abundance of flowers reminiscent of an English cottage garden. Ellen often brings fresh cuts inside to add as accents.
summer house ideas
Ellen and her husband purchased their fixer upper of a home 20 years ago. To save money they did an initial cosmetic renovation and lived in the house with the original footprint for years.

Two years ago were able to do a major renovation that included a large addition on the back of the home. The renovation was laid out with an open concept living space, a master bedroom and bathroom and a large stone patio outside.

The staircase that used to be in the center of the house had to moved and was probably the biggest project. During the process they had two staircases and eventually they were about to close off and remove one of them.
Ellen likes to keep to keep things simple with her design and color pallet.
She uses a lot of refinished, upcycled and vintage pieces mixed in. “I think that a large dramatic vase, dough bowl, basket or urn makes a great accessory!”
The majority of the building materials for the addition and the home furnishings were found on Craigslist. It’s exciting to see and share this budget friendly home that has high end visual impact.
Ellen loves adding in plants, flowers, branches etc. They instantly transform the look of a room with little to no expense.

Lots of texture is key here in a room with mostly neutrals. Slipcovered furniture makes it easy to care for and keep clean.

The stunning open kitchen at Featherglass with plenty of beautiful white.

The master bedroom is styled simply without a lot of clutter.

The master bathroom has that farmhouse shiplap feel, but without looking mundane or commonplace.

Ellen is so clever in her displays and simple summer house ideas. Don’t you love this vintage mirror used as a tub tray?!!

What a beautiful retreat from this chaotic world. I would never want to leave. Enjoy! ☀️

  2. It doesn’t appear that there is any furniture in the bedroom other than a bed and chair. Is there a dresser/chest of drawers? Curious because I’m in the process of replacing mine but can’t seem to find what others are using especially for a light colored, French flair.

    1. Hello Margo! This is only view of her master, and if you hop on and see her Instagram feed there’s a lot more. Like this view with her antique French cabinet: https://www.instagram.com/p/B0Gq8MOHnkL/
      Thanks for stopping by,
      Janet

I have a master closet behind the bed, there is a pocket door next to my bed so I don’t have any dressers. There is a small French finished dresser/desk though just inside the closet that Janet did post a pic of above. It’s the one with the oval mirror above it. There is a tutorial for that finish in my story highlights ?

      1. Where was the dresser/desk purchased, and the entry table/dresser in the picture below it? Lovely!
        Myrna

I enjoy looking at all the home décor styles. My favorite style is a home that is decorated to make one feel cozy, loved and inspired. Pops of color, fresh flowers and whimsical touches in unexpected places make me feel happy. Also, I love when you see a room or home and when you leave from your visit, you feel inspired to decorate your own home. I also love when old family pieces of art or furniture are refreshed and used in a modern way. “The most important work that you will ever do is in the walls of your own home!”
