Trend Alert: Coastal Grandmother Style!

The Coastal Grandmother Decor Style has been trending all over social media, and I’m there for it!  This trendy decor style is a fresh take on the classic beachy home decor that’s been around for years, and I’m sure you’ll love it just as much as I do!

What Is Coastal Grandmother Decor?

With the rise of the Grand Millennial trend (I’ve previously talked about it in THIS post) there seems to be a growing appreciation for more traditional decor styles that allow our personality to shine while keeping functionality in mind.

The revival of the “grandma chic” look has introduced us to new aesthetics trends like Cottagecore, Dark Academy and Vintage Maximalism. Now, the Coastal Grandmother Style is in the spotlight.

The coastal grandmother decor trend is heavily inspired by Nancy Meyers movies (think: Diane Keaton in her iconic white turtlenecks and camel pants  in Something’s Gotta Give). But, this style decor has been a staple in the interior design world even before we were introduced to Nancy Meyers immaculate interiors.

Elements of the Coastal Grandmother Decor Style

With an emphasis on natural elements, vintage details and soft colors, this decor style is not so much about a single piece of furniture but an overall mood and feel.
It’s about capturing the laid-back feeling in serene spaces while creating a stylish and welcoming home.

Most rooms in this decor aesthetic feature a color scheme that emphasizes white. Always in different tones and hues to avoid making the rooms look sterile.

It’s all about creamy whites, buttery beiges, light grays and pale blues tints that seem to replicate colors we’ll find walking down the beach.
There’re also dark colors used sparingly to add contrast without removing the airy feel. Such as low saturated like blacks, brows and deep greens.

Why Is It Trending?

There’s something very appealing and peculiar about this decor style…It’s incredibly easy to mimic, whether you live at the beach or in a small apartment.

Unlike other trends that require specific pieces of furniture or architectural spaces, the grandma coastal decor requires little more than a few details and attention to color.
I dare to say you don’t need to spend much, either. The coastal grandmother decor aesthetic is inexpensive and DIY friendly.

It’s easy for most of us to recreate this look in our own homes. Rearranging our furniture, using slipcovers for our chairs, adding seashore elements OR painting a few furniture pieces are just a few ways to get this look.

Here are some tips and inspiration to get your home looking like out of a Nancy Meyers movie!

How To Get Coastal Grandmother Decor – Tips & Tricks

Start With The Basics: You don’t need to go all-in on coastal grandma decor right away—you can ease into it over time!

For an envy-inducing coastal granny home, details make all the difference!

Start by adding one item that matches the coastal style that fits in with your existing pieces like slipcovers for your dining room chairs. These slipcovers are stylish and can adapt to any furniture style you own.

Bistro counter stools with natural textures and nautical details, like these by Kouboo, also help to enhance that effortless and stylish coastal look.

Display your favorite seaside treasures—like shells, starfish, and sand dollars—in simple glass jars or glasses.
Also, if you want to stay on theme, coastal-inspired candles are a nice touch.

To recreate a similar interior to the ones shown in Nancy Meyer films, think about adding interesting fabrics. Throw pillows in french ticking linen fabrics, knitted throw blankets in creamy hues, white-and-blue striped accent details … the list goes on!

Small decorative elements like striped umbrellas, navy and gold serving trays and console tables in coastal blue shades work perfectly with this aesthetic.

My favorite throw pillows to get this look are these baby blue square pillow covers with coconut buttons and these buffalo checked pillows. Both are subtle but add that special touch of coastal flair.

Add a throw blanket to infuse the coastal look to your living room. This pure cotton striped blanket/throw is a lovely option and adds to the nautical-meets-chic coastal look.

It’s All In The Details – Ideas To Keep In Mind

Get creative with your rugs!  Sisal or seagrass rugs are fantastic way to add the organic texture and earthy colors needed to achieve the coastal style. Just like we can see in the below image of the Something Gotta Give movie set, where the rug helps anchor the dining table.

If seagrass rugs are not your cup of tea, go for other decor elements like this jute pouf.

Include art pieces that evoke the peaceful feeling of a lazy summer at the beach. Like in the movie set, you’ll be able to see many reproductions of famous artwork by Edward Henry Potthast as well as Kenton Nelson across all the rooms of the home, both artists were famous for their artwork inspired by the seaside-theme.

Considering switching from plastic planters to terracotta ones. Add ceramic vases (this set is perfect to nail this d wood ecor look!) and candles to your mantle with texture or natural finishes (like this seagrass tea light candle holders, and these pieces)

Use vintage inspired milk can jugs as vases, like this one, instead of plastic or clear ones. Take your cook books and give them room in your kitchen, ideally on their own shelves.

Display your own ironstone. If you don’t have many pieces, this is the best moment to start growing your collection. You can make it a key part of your home decor!

Coastal Granny Chic Decor & Fashion

If you’re a big fan of Nancy Meyers films and interiors, I’m pretty sure you’ll have a soft spot for Diane Keaton too. Especially her role in Something’s Gotta Give!

While researching pictures of the gorgeous home, I couldn’t help being inspired by her outfits in the film so I found some amazing fashion pieces on Amazon.

Finding out its trending with the younger crowds over TikTok and Instagram was funny to me because I’ve decorated this way my entire life, especially in my beach home!

I’m so happy the coastal grandma decor style is getting the attention it deserves and more people are embracing it! It truly is incredibly charming and easy to recreate in any home! What do you think about it? Do you like the Coastal Grandma Style Decor? Let me below in the comments!
