It can be challenging to learn how to organize your closet. But, with the right system and a few helpful tips, you can make it easier to get dressed and keep your closet in order year-round!

Organizing your closet is more than just color-coding your pieces and getting the latest gadgets to keep things looking organized. It’s about creating a system that makes your closet work for your lifestyle and makes your day-to-day routine easier.

How to organize your closet

I know it sounds like a lot, but I promise it’s not as daunting as it seems! To help you get started, here are some simple steps to help you organize your closet:

Declutter your closet

First things first: Empty your entire closet and start decluttering.

Start with a clean slate by going through each item in your closet. Coats, underwear, shoes, accessories, everything!

To simplify this step, choose just one clothing category and work your way from there (such as dresses, t-shirts, jeans, etc.) Make sure to clean the floor and make space around the area to lay out every piece. To keep things organized, ensure you have trash bags, containers, and boxes on hand.

Separate the items into 4 piles:

  • The throwaway or donate pile
  • The alter or repair pile
  • The “I’m not sure” pile
  • The back-to-the-closet pile

Take every item in that category from your closet and lay it out. Then, analyze if you want to keep it, donate it or if it needs to be thrown away.

How to Organize Your Closet – Decluttering Questions:

Here are some questions to ask yourself when deciding what to do with each item of clothing you own:

  • Does this fit my current shape? If it doesn’t, can it be fixed? (Look out for cleave gaping, broken zippers, missing buttons, hems, etc.)
  • Is it in good condition? If it’s not, can it be fixed?
  • Does this piece reflect my fashion style?
  • Do I like how I look at this?
  • Do I feel comfortable when I wear this?
  • Do I wear this regularly?
  • When is the last time I wore this?

Not sure about certain items? Here is where the “I’m not sure” pile comes in handy!

Put everything in your “I’m not sure” pile in a box and store it at the back of your closet. After a month or so, if you haven’t dug it out again, it’s time to donate it.

Once you have edited your wardrobe and you are sure about all your clothing pieces, it’s time to organize your closet to work for you

You’re probably wondering “What is the best way to organize your closet?”

Here are some of the ultimate closet organization ideas to make the most of any closet:

Get matching velvet hangers

This little tip will transform the way your closet looks and the way you use it.

Getting matching velvet hangers will instantly elevate your closet aesthetic, but it will also keep your clothes in better shape and save you a lot of closet space.

Make sure every item has a “home”

Forget piling folded clothes on your shelves!

Instead, keep everything tidy by storing your items in baskets or clear acrylic shirt boxes and placing them on your shelves. As a result, your closet will look more organized, and you’ll have a clearer view of everything.

Consider adding a second rod

If you’re struggling with a small closet and too many clothes, maybe installing a second closet rod above the main one is a good idea. Adding a second one will double your space and make every item you own visible and accessible.

Group your items

Split your wardrobe into categories and group your items in a way that makes sense to you. T-shirts, sweatshirts, and leggings go in the same drawer, trousers and blazers hang on the same side of the rack, etc.

Sorting your items into categories will make it easier for you to find them and keep everything organized.

Utilize every inch of your closet

Maximize every corner in your closet using lazy susans or other rotating organizers. This works especially well for small accessories you need daily access to!

Use vertical space

Don’t forget to utilize the vertical space above your rod clothing rack. Use vertical organizers to store purses and hats.

Find your perfect folding method

You’re more likely to wear something if you can see it, that’s why the way you fold your clothing matters so much.

Piling and stacking your clothing can seem easier but you run the risk of forgetting about the items tucked away underneath the pile.

There’re different ways to fold your clothing, mostly depending on the item’s fabric. But, I highly recommend the Marie Kondo folding method to keep everything neatly organized in plain sight!

Add a standalone clothes rack

If you’re a visual person who likes to experiment with fashion, consider having a clothing rack in your room. You can use it to feel inspired by your favorite pieces or to hang your outfits beforehand and have them ready to wear. I recently shared how to make a folding screen and I utilize it for hanging outfits that I’m deciding on wearing.

Use smart storage

Using smart storage options is a must, no matter the size of your closet.

Keep your out-of-season clothing protected and out of sight using under-bed storage bag organizers.

Add an over-the-door shoe rack to store small items.

Repurpose old boxes as drawer dividers to corral your smaller clothing items and keep them neatly organized.

There are so many options to use the space you have more efficiently. It just takes a little time and a little creativity to figure out what works best for your wardrobe and space.

Biggest tip? Organize as you go.

Take 5 minutes a day to keep your closet tidy!

Whether that is putting the dirty clothes in the hamper, corraling your knick-knacks in a cute basket, putting the shoes in their place, hanging your coat, tidying up your shelves… If you take 5 minutes to keep your closet in top shape, next season decluttering and organizing your wardrobe will be less time-consuming and much easier!

Hopefully, these tips for organizing your closet will give you some ideas and inspire you to revamp your closet and make the most of it!
