Bold Meets Preppy in San Francisco Designer Marea Clark’s Signature Aesthetic
In this new edition of Designer Spotlight, we’ll explore the work of San Francisco designer Marea Clark and her design studio, MCI.
I’ve recently come across her work and I find it impressive how she honors classic design while pushing boundaries!
This talented San Francisco designer has found the sweet spot between sophistication and comfort, crafting spaces that feel polished and perfectly lived in. All of her designs carry a hint of Southern charm mixed with West Coast cool.
Kentucky-born Marea Clark grew up in a creative family, which led her to nurture an appreciation for art in all forms.
In her interior creations, her unique sensibility to art is obvious. Each project feels like a respectful nod to the past, yet there’s always an unmistakably contemporary essence.
Her design approach is not one to shy away from mixing different eras or styles, always on the lookout for beauty in unexpected corners.
Let’s take a closer look at her work! Grab a cup of your favorite beverage and let’s get inspired by this San Francisco designer, shall we?!
Designer Spotlight: Marea Clark
In the Lyon Street project, we get a glimpse of the designer family home. There’s an overall color palette of blues, greens, and neutrals, combined with a mix of patterns and textures.
This beautiful juxtaposition creates a sophisticated yet interesting interior, exemplifying San Francisco designer Marea Clark’s fresh take on traditional design.
In the living room, a light blue sofa topped with soft green and patterned throw pillows makes the main seating area.
Adding touches of classic charm, there’s a tufted beige ottoman serving as a coffee table and a stylish mid-century-inspired armchair mixed in with the more traditional seatings.
A large window opens to a quaint balcony, flooding this breakfast room with natural light. The centerpiece is a dark wood farmhouse table, surrounded by a mix of wooden benches with rush seats and classic Windsor chairs.
A light blue built-in showcasing contemporary art elements offsets this traditional foundation.
We can see the same artful balance of rustic charm with modern elegance in other rooms, like the main dining room.
This elegantly designed corner of a room from the Pacific Heights I project is another example of San Francisco designer Clark’s unique way of balancing traditional and contemporary styles.
Crisp white walls, intricate molding, and gentle whimsical touches -like the wallpaper lining the cabinet nook- give the entire room a timeless yet fresh aesthetic.
In the project Pacific Heights II, the feel in this home is serene and sophisticated, with a romantic flair that mixes Southern hospitality with laid-back coastal living vibes.
The dining room is a floral daydream! The floral wallpaper creates an enchanted garden feel, while a crystal chandelier adds sparkle.
The table, set with vintage pink china and a lush centerpiece, is ideal for a fancy dinner party.
Built-in bookshelves frame a classic fireplace, topped by a gilt mirror. Blue and white porcelain adds traditional flair, while cream chairs create a cozy conversation spot.
This entryway is one of my favorite rooms in this lovely Southampton home. The vertical wood planks create a rustic shiplap that feels elevated and luxe!
Grounding the space, there’s a stunning textured rug paired with high-contrast furniture pieces, like the round black table and ottomans. The little details, like the themed gallery wall featuring vintage fish illustrations and white trims, help to balance out the warm and dark tones in the room.
The other rooms in this home have a more moody and lush feel, with deep blues, grey and gentle light wooden tones.
Note how detailed and textured each element is, especially the solid-colored fabrics!
In the airy Presidio Terrace I project, a clean palette gets a punch from woven rattan chairs and blue banquette seating. A modern chandelier adds sculptural flair, while large windows bring the outdoors in.
The neutral and airy color palette with fresh greenery creates a laid-back vibe throughout the home, like in the kitchen and living room.
In the guest house, a bold tropical statement with its lush fig leaf wallpaper and rattan textures. The brass disc light fixture adds drama, while curved seating in sea-foam green keeps things cool and comfy.

Pops of yellow accessories all across the room brighten the space delicately.
It’s such an eye-catching mix of preppy and summery vintage! Don’t you think?

There were many pretty features but the shiplap was my favorite. I liked the natural tone, even though I’m not a fan of browns. I can’t remember seeing it not painted white. I found it refreshing and different.
