As the colder months settle in, it’s the perfect time to introduce new lifestyle choices, adjust your beauty routines, explore winter hobbies, and create practices to prioritize self-care.

Our bodies and minds can feel the impact of shorter and colder days – from dry skin and brittle hair to shifts in sleep patterns and mood swings. This is where self-care becomes your winter ally!

Winter Self-Care Routines And Practices

With the right winter self-care routines and practices,  you can help your body and mind adjust to seasonal changes. It’s all about replenishing your skin, revitalizing your spirit, and ensuring your well-being doesn’t take a backseat.

Adjust Your Lifestyle & Self-Care Choices

Being active isn’t just about fitness; moving your body improves your mood and overall health, even boosting your immunity.

Home Workouts

While going to the gym sounds like the obvious solution, during winter this can be tricky. The best alternative? Keep an active lifestyle by introducing home workouts!

Whether it’s gentle yoga, a quick HIIT workout, or a simple indoor walking session, a bit of space in your home can become your new fitness hub.

Don’t underestimate home equipment workouts – a resistance band and some dumbbells can do wonders!

If you’re invested in your health journey, consider getting an indoor treadmill. Back in the day, the only ones available were bulky and not very pretty to look at, but now there are new ones that are sleek and lightweight, like this walking pad.

Sleep Routine

Quality sleep is crucial all year long, but during the winter season even more so! If you battle with the winter blues, keeping a healthy sleep routine can help tremendously.

Limiting your screen time before bedtime, keeping your bedroom cool and dark along with removing your evening caffeine fix are some simple ways to help your sleep improve.

Healthy Nutrition

Nutrition is also essential throughout the year, but especially when temperatures lower. A way to get all your nutrition needs is to elevate your daily intake of seasonal superfoods – think berries, broccoli, leafy greens, nuts, and fish.
These staples not only tickle your taste buds but also give your immune system the extra boost it needs during the colder months.

Natural Sunlight

Winter darkness is real, but to get the benefits of natural sunlight, you need to soak up every bit you can!
Seek light wherever you can – go for a stroll or simply sit outside during daylight hours to soak in that natural vitamin D.
It’s a simple mood lifter, it helps to restore your sleep cycle and it’s also a wonderful practice to take a pause and connect with the world around you.

Revamp your Winter Self-Care & Haircare Routine

Winter is beautiful, but it can be a bit harsh on your locks! I’ve spoken before about how much I love the Revlon styler brush and during winter, I tend to use it even more.

Airdrying is more complicated during this time, so if you use styling heating tools like me, you need to adjust your haircare routine with products that nourish your hair and protect it from outside factors.

Treat it to a weekly hair mask or deep conditioning session to replenish moisture and combat dryness. Look for products with hydrating ingredients like argan oil or shea butter – like this Moroccanoil oil treatment and this OUAI one with shea butter and keratin for fine hair. A good heat protectant for hair is important, so don’t skip it. Try something lightweight, like this Kerastase blow dry primer or the OUAI multitasking leave-in conditioner.

Don’t forget about your scalp’s health, too!

Winter often affects this part of our body yet we don’t pay much attention to it. There are specific products targeted to different issues, ranging from dandruffdryness, and oiliness to build-up.

Swap out your cotton pillowcases for satin ones. Why? Because they’re gentle on your hair and reduce friction, minimizing breakage and those pesky split ends. It’s a small change with a big impact!

Change Up Your Skincare Routine for Cold Weather

Winter air can be harsh on the skin, which is why it’s best to avoid cleansers that strip away too much of your skin’s natural oils. Instead, look for hydrating and gentle cleansers that leave your skin feeling refreshed without overdoing it.

You should try to find one that targets your skin concerns, but some of my favorites are this Aveeno one for sensitive skinthis one by Paula’s Choice that’s perfect for rosacea-prone skin, and this PH-balancing COSRX cleanser.

Double down on hydration by incorporating a rich moisturizer into your routine. Consider products with ingredients like hyaluronic acid to lock in moisture.

Add “slugging” to your skincare winter routine. Slugging is a simple method to aid dry skin using an occlusive -like vaseline- on top of your moisturizer. It helps by trapping in the moisture in your skin and it works wonders!

Transform Your Home Into a Hygge Dream

Winter is the perfect time to transform your home into a cozy sanctuary, and what better way to do it than by embracing the Hygge lifestyle?

For this, arrange your furniture to encourage conversation and relaxation. Create little nooks with plush cushions and chunky throw blankets where you can unwind with a good book (or Kindle!) and a cup of tea.

Invest in soft, snuggly blankets and warm lighting like fairy lights, table lamps, and candles to create a calming ambiance.

Cultivating Winter Hobbies for Self-Care

On the topic of a more hygge life, let’s talk about mindful practices and hobbies to enjoy during this season.

For those who enjoy time to get some insight and inner work, you can take a moment each day to jot down your thoughts, express gratitude, or set intentions by keeping a reflective journal or gratitude practice. I really like this 5-minute gratitude journal for an everyday practice, it’s such a simple concept and so pretty.

Explore indoor-friendly hobbies like knitting, painting, or indoor gardening.

During the winter months, I usually try to work on my DIY projects and devote more time to reading.

Embrace the colder days and indoor time finding hobbies and practices that you love and give you time to pause and enjoy the moment!
