The Weekly Edit - Shabbyfufu

We were so fortunate to be able to head back up to our beach home last week, after spending the holidays there! Our daughter and her husband had been there after the holidays and with the awful weather in California decided to extend their stay. Now it’s back to work for all and below are a few photos that I can share.

It was really cold with the temps in the low 40’s and steady winds of up to 20mph most of the weekend! A winter sky is a benefit of the cold weather that we experienced.

I shot this with my new iPhone 14 Pro from our place. It was pretty far away and although not a perfect image I was amazed at the quality of this phone camera! Lots of waves and definitely wet suit temps for those brave enough to head into the ocean.

My kids are adults and don’t want their photos on my blog, but pets are allowed! This is our daughter’s Brussels Griffon who is almost 6 years old and a super smart little bundle of energy.

DESIGN DIGEST

It’s no secret to those who’ve been following for awhile that I love incorporating vintage pieces into my décor. I just got off a call with an interview from a magazine that approached me recently to do a story on my home. Of course I talked about vintage charm and how it makes home yours! More about that when it’s out, but I recently attended a fabulous estate sale in town and picked up these items below!

This was the back of the property and sad to know that it will likely be sold and developed into a new modern box style home. That’s what all of the builders are doing here and there isn’t much charm to any of the new multi million dollar homes that I see.

This MASSIVE coral centerpiece is not from the sea and not vintage, but I was fascinated by the sheer scale and had to have it! It’s definitely a piece of art and holds 6 candles in the folds. Hard to tell scale from photos, but it’s huge.

I also picked up this vintage cabbageware pottery piece that I may utilize to house utensils beside my new oven. If you’ve been thinking of starting a cabbageware collection, I highly recommend starting with this set of two dinner plates that comes in green or pink and is a great way to see if you’d like to take things further. I have them and they are so pretty!

Again…scale is deceiving in photos and this vintage copper tea kettle is quite oversized and in great shape! Here’s a nice one that I had found on Amazon that has a European look to it and an affordable price. I collect copper and have lots of French pots and pans that this will mingle nicely with. I have this unlacquered copper pot rail as well as this unlacquered brass pot rail on my wish list to install once my Ilve oven is in. Which one do you prefer?

Visit my Amazon Storefront here that I update several times a week for my favorite finds for home, fashion, and much more!

FASHION FAVORITES

As I sit here chatting with you I’m wearing this Velour Tunic with cowl neck and it’s part of my winter black & white wardrobe staple! Currently on sale for half of what I paid for it, so grab this cozy piece! I’m picking up a few travel pieces for my birthday trip next month and this quilted cowl neck tunic from Chico’s Zenergy line is in my cart. Zenergy is the line that I wear most often both for travel and around the home. The most comfortable clothing that I’ve found and comfort is key over 50+, as well as style!

BEST OF BEAUTY

Have you used Almay cosmetics over the years, as I have? They have a new anti-aging foundation with hyaluronic acid that matches my skin tone perfectly and is light for daily wear. I have an oily scalp and in the winter the remainder of my long hair tends to be dry. In order to not wash it daily I use this dry shampoo and bonus points for this one that I spray on to hide the roots inbetween salon visits. This rotating lazy Susan for your make-up and perfumes is a stylish way to keep it all organized and won’t break the bank.

 WHAT TO WATCH | READ

If you’re a cat owner, check out Inside The Mind Of A Cat on Netflix. I’m always fascinated by my own cat Libra and what he conjures up around the house! Also check out The Electrical Life Of Louis Wain which is set in Victorian England and based on a true story that changes the public perception of cats. Unless you’re living under a rock you’ve probably heard of the book Lessons In Chemistry, currently the #1 best seller on Amazon. I’m about half way through and it’s a page turner touching on women’s lives, careers, and struggle for empowerment in the late 50s and early 60s. It follows the story of Elizabeth Zott, a brilliant chemist who is forced to become a television chef when she finds herself a young, single mother.

WEEKLY TIP

To remove wax from tabletops, use a blow-dryer on the lowest setting for a few minutes. Then you should be able to scrape it off with the edge of a credit card.

On tablecloths use ice to freeze the wax or place the item in the freezer. Scrape off what you can and then use mineral spirits to remove residue. Next rinse by hand with isopropyl alcohol and then use an enzyme detergent to wash.

  1. Sherri M. says:

Such a wonderful post Janet! Lots of good ideas and interesting info. Thanks!

    1. Sherri, I truly appreciate you taking the time to let me know which helps me to keep on track! Enjoy your week

  2. It was fun reading this and catching up on what’s been going on in your life, Janet. I, too, mourn the loss of the beautiful ‘old’ homes and the ‘boxes’ they are building to replace them. We had a wonderful Rutenberg home when we lived in FL. Back then their signature was the rounded wall -usually in the family room. I have lived in almost 20 houses over the years and that was one of the top two I loved most.

Love Chico’s line and have a few of their travel pieces.

Have a wonderful Sunday and upcoming week-Diana

    1. Glad that you enjoyed the chatty post Diana! Some of the old homes around here are worth only the land value at this point, but I don’t care for that boxy style which has no style IMO. We almost had a Rutenberg home built for us when we thought about moving recently and their new plans are wonderful!
Happy new week to you…xo, Janet

  3. Love that copper kettle Janet!

    1. I can’t wait to display that kettle on my new stove Annie! Enjoy your week…xo

  4. Lovely post. I’ve been collecting cabbage ware for several years. Be sure to check out the Bordallo Pinheiro Cabbage Collection…it’s my favorite.. I mostly use mine during Spring/Easter season when I bring out my rabbit collection and mix with it. I have some pink but mostly green…perfect for a huge lover of a pink/green combo (me!!). Don’t you love estate sales? You found some great things…and love your shot of that patio/pool area.

    1. Thanks for stopping by Leslie and for letting me know that you enjoyed the post. I too collect Bordallo Pinheiro and enjoy using it mostly in the spring months as well! We still have some great true estate sales around here and I have to restrain myself from buying so much of what I see. Enjoy your week!

  5. I don’t know if I’ve ever told you that reading your blog posts is like visiting you, and sitting down and having a wonderful chat! Even with a colder attempts, I know your visit with your sweet girl and her husband at the beach would have been absolutely fabulous, and let’s talk about how adorable your granddoggy is; just one cutie! Thanks for the info, something good to read and two good things to watch. my daughter and I have had a running joke for several years about Benedict (in good nature of course because we like him so much) and his last name, we’ve come up with Benedict Cumberbaugh, Benedict Cucumberpatch(one of our favorites 🤣) he certainly is an eclectic and very talented actor, definitely look forward to seeing that. Also, what great finds, the ones you personally have, loved the kettle in particular, and the ones you recommend. I always love perusing your Amazon store and appreciate all of your suggestions. Can I just say, that you consistently make it feel like a best friend sharing secrets, and not like you have to tread water going through to get to a blog post like it’s happening with so many other blogs sadly. Thank you for that! I always look forward to your posts ❤️

    1. Oh Dee…you made my day, in fact…my week! It’s funny but I’m now in my 18th year of blogging and this is how I used to write posts back in the early days. Then came monetization and I got away from it, but I’m going to keep doing more of these chatty girlfriend posts in the future. Do watch that movie with Benedict and let me know what you think! Enjoy your week
