Early Fall Decorating – Step By Step

I recently shared where I’m going this fall in this post that talks about fall decorating on a budget for a high end look! Head over for that one for sources and more, as we head into another harvest season soon. I’m joining a few friends today for a new monthly series on FALL MOMENTS, so be sure to scroll down for all of the inspiration that they share. I don’t get too carried away with fall decorating, but I enjoy putting out the velvet pumpkins (find them HERE), generally in late October. This shot below was from last year and it will change again as I’ve moved furniture around!

Take a look in my Amazon shop here if you’re looking to add a few affordable new pieces. That’s where all of my fall decor for this year is from!

So how to get started on decorating for fall this year? Follow along with these tips below and I’ve included some valuable links to help as well.

  1. Remove summer pillows, throws, florals & decorative objects (eg: shells)
  2. Clean your house! Obviously most of us love to have our homes look and feel fresh and clean on a regular basis. I find that once I remove all of the season styling “stuff”, a deep clean is so much easier to do! Here is one of my best deep cleaning posts that you might enjoy.
  3. Take out those bins full of fall decor and sort through. Make a keep pile and a discard pile.
  4. Sell what no longer suits your needs. Host a garage sale! Sell on Facebook Marketplace (local groups are best). Or, donate to a local charity, shelter or school.
  5. Decide on a seasonal color scheme now! Color swaps from year to year one of the best ways to change out your look in your home…just like your wardrobe. You don’t have to replace everything, but decide on a couple of accent colors and roll with it for a few pillow covers, throws and florals. You’ll be so glad that you did this!
  6. Start shopping now for your fresh fall decor needs and wants! I don’t particularly like to spend a lot on seasonal goods, but I do refresh my stash. My Amazon shop has some stylish and elegant autumn decor pieces that are affordable.
  7. If you craft (as I generally do) it’s time to get going on some fall projects! Here are a few fall wreath ideas that are suitable for September and easy to create in your own style. Make some Chinoiserie pumpkins or other decorative decoupage pumpkins with the instructions in this post!
  8. September is still fairly warm in most of the U.S. but fall is on the way! This is a great time of year to “suggest” fall by displaying fruits and vegetables with rich color. You won’t find pumpkins just yet, but set out some apples, pomegranates, red grapes in a wood bowl. Learn to make a fun table centerpiece with vegetables in this post and in this post as well.
  9. Forage for fall! I recently showed you my wood dough bowl full of foraged finds from my own garden. If you don’t have a garden then see what you can find while out for a walk. Even down south we have branches to clip and nuts to forage. No leaves with color here, but use your imagination if this is the case where you live!
  10. While you may not want to put much in place up for fall, think about what you will do for October. Do you have velvet pumpkins as I do? Dust them off and check the rest of your stash for linens that might need washing, silver that needs polishing and dinnerware that might be hiding away.

  1. That pop of color on the creamy chair just speaks to fall. That makes a cozy spot. I’m always looking for warm shades of caramel throws as it goes with anything….being that I have to work with turquoise in one large room.
I made some velvet pumpkins last year and wish I’d had better dainty stems to work with. I should order some off Etsy and do some more as those feathers are too cute on yours!!
Thanks for the Amazon link..your page has so many things I love!
