For a fresh home decor update, explore different ways of redecorating your home for free with what you already have!

From rearranging furniture to making simple DIY updates, you can transform your living space without spending a cent. And in this post, I will show you how. We’ll explore different ways of redecorating for free and I’ll also give you some of my favorite budget-friendly tips for refreshing your home.

These ideas will help you give your home a fresh new feel for free.

How to Redecorate Without Buying Anything

With a few simple changes, you can breathe new life into your home for free. How, you ask? By shopping your home and repurposing items you already own! Before diving in headfirst, it’s crucial to evaluate your current decor and make sure your home reflects your style and meets your comfort needs.

Take a walk through each room of your home and pay attention to the colors, patterns, and textures around you. Also, check if the layout of your furniture is working for your daily life. Besides considering how your home looks, you should also consider how it works for you. Is there any area in your home you could use more effectively? Are there areas of your home that need more storage? Do you need better lighting in certain rooms?

Keeping these practical considerations in mind will help you revamp your room for free while also addressing its functionality.

Redecorating For Free – Shop Your Home

Now, for my favorite part, let’s talk about shopping your home! Redecorating for free is all about reimagining items you already have.
This means studying the decor elements you have right now and finding new ways to incorporate them into your decor design.

It may sound simple (and it is) but sometimes we can get caught up thinking too much about decor rules.

My advice? Have fun! Walk through your rooms and let your own home spark inspiration. If an item catches your eye, place it in different ways around the room and try to think about how you can repurpose it. I also recommend going through your storage areas and pulling out any decor items you may have forgotten about.

This could include things like pillows, vases, mementos, antiques, picture frames, and decorative items from other seasons. When an item catches your eye, try to think about how you can use it in a new way!

Rearrange Your Rooms for a New Look

Next, consider rearranging the furniture in your space. Simply moving things around can make a big difference in the overall look and feel of a room.

You can go the dramatic route and change your furniture layout or you can do something less time-consuming, like moving around just accent elements or swapping small furniture pieces from one room to another.

Take a look at items you have around the house that you’re not using and see if you can repurpose them for your decor. For example, you can turn an old ladder into a plant stand, an outdoor bench can turn into an indoor one for a rustic touch or you can transform an unused basket into a trendy hanging lamp.

Take on DIY projects:

With just a few supplies and some creativity, you can transform dull and outdated items into new and stylish decor pieces.

If you have been a long-time reader of this blog, you know I have a soft spot for DIY projects. I have tons of DIY tutorials that I have tried and tested over the years, and I still think it’s one of the most fun and rewarding ways to redecorate your home for free. My favorite way? Paint!

Whether it’s an old dresser, a side table, or a chandelier, painting it in a bold new color can instantly refresh the room.

A simple way to do this that’s perfect for beginners is using spray paint. Here is a fun tutorial I’ve written before with my spray painting process. There are other painting methods, like painting wood furniture without sanding or (my favorite) giving your furniture a chalk finish without chalk paint

But painting furniture is not the only type of DIY project that can impact your redecorating for-free adventure. Repurposing old furniture using different techniques is also a wonderful way to go. Just like I did when I recycled a dry sink into a modern bar cabinet.

You can create pretty accents to spruce up your decor by making your own decorations. Ruffle clay bowls, a dried flower chandelier or even recycling an old lampshade into a chandelier are really simple DIY projects that can have a dramatic impact on your decor design.

Redecorating your Home: Change Up Your Textiles

The textiles adorning your home can rejigged the mood of your space almost instantly.

A way I love to do this is by using slipcovers. It’s an easy and quick way to liven up your space and introduce a new color palette. Personally, I prefer to go with a neutral style, especially for warmer months because I feel it makes any room feel fresh and charming. My favorite ones are from a cute little Etsy store that specializes in this style, like this ruffled sofa slipcover and these ruffled pillowcases.

But of course, it is not the only way! You can try adding some of your bedroom’s throw pillows to your sofa, use a throw blanket as a faux slipcover, or if you like the DIY route, create your own throw pillows!

You can use a sewing machine or hand-sew your own pillows if you have fabric scraps lying around. I have a tutorial for a simple and quick pillowcase, click here for more details.

If you have the time to embark on a longer DIY project, consider reupholstering your sofa! Although it may sound daunting, I promise is not as scary as it sounds and it can be very simple! I have a step-by-step tutorial on how to do it. Plus some of my favorite tips on how to make the entire process much easier!

Swap Your Artwork

If you have a collection of framed artwork, consider rearranging it to give your space a new look or swap some of your framed artwork. If you don’t know where to find new artwork, worry not! Try to think outside the box and use things you already own.
I encourage you to go through some of those old drawers and folders where you may have kept images, postcards, or photos through the years, pick your favorites, and display them.

Another way to introduce new artwork to your home for free is to find images in the public domain that reflects your style.

Here is a popular post that I’ve written on where to source artwork for free that you can download and print!

I feel drawn to botanicals and landscapes, so I often go to sites like RawPixel and FreePick to find illustrations that speak to me. You just need to download your favorite illustration or photo and print them out.

Another option is to find printable images on Etsy. Although it’s not free, it’s very inexpensive and you can even find custom illustrations for a few bucks!

Redecorating your Home for Free – Rearrange Your Bookshelves:

You’ll be surprised how easy it can be to update the look of your space by decluttering and rearranging your bookshelves!

No need to go out and buy anything new, just take some time to declutter and reorganize the books you already own.

Start by taking all the books off the shelf and dusting them off. Then, try different arrangements! You can group your books by color or size, and mix in some decorative objects like floral arrangements, vases, or figurines. If you’re feeling crafty, go for a DIY project and give your new books a vintage and old-world look with this tutorial.

You can also opt for a minimalist approach and declutter your bookshelves, placing only a few books and scattering a few decorative elements.

I just noticed you went to OSU; we actually just bought right outside of Columbus in Granville, OH. Not sure if you ever made the trek – we’re about 30 minutes east of Columbus, a cute little quaint Ohio town.
